You have not given us much to work on here. At least, provide us with the first and last letter of the Share you are trying to write to.

Next thing: There are restrictions on Share names. This screenshot is from the Add Share page on the GUI:

Another thing, you have not configured the $------------------N and the S----------------n shares. You do this from the Share Page....

The D---a Share is configured as 'Secure' and you say you are accessing it from a Windows vm. (With Secure, you will require a login to copy/write to that share.) You do realize that Windows now requires that you log into any server with a valid user account on that server. You can find instructions for setting that up here:

and continuing through the next two posts.

The share is called dataimage.png

Have you tried Tools - New Permissions on the data share?

yes I have

Any particular reason the array disks are using exFAT? Not sure if it's related, but support is limited, or were the disks already using that fs?

  • Community Expert

Let's try this. Go to Shares and click on your 'data' share name under "User Shares". Then set 'Minimum free space:' according to the instructions below in this screenshot. (Your present setting looks like the default setting which is usually way too large.)

Missed that in diagnostics. Good question.

I still have the error and its exfat beause I moved from truenas to unraid so it used exfat

  • Community Expert

TrueNAS doesn't use exFAT, it uses ZFS, like mentioned not sure the issue is related to that, I can copy from Windows 10 to exFAT devices, but don't have Windows 11 to test with.

But if you have another device that you can add to the array or as a pool, format it with a different filesystem and test copying to it to see if it makes any difference.

I had to move all of truenas to a external SSD using exfat and I found that I could just put the SSD into unraid so I did

  • Community Expert

There's nothing logged on Unraid, suggesting it's an external problem; maybe Windows 11 doesn't like exFAT over SMB, hence my recommendation to test with a different fs.

Only way is to copy data off before formatting. Sorry...

Please understand this is not the first time this problem has come up. Persons who have disks formatted with reiserfs (File system drivers for it have already been dropped from current Linux kernel-- It will affected Unraid users when LimeTech switches to version 6.13 of the Linux kernel!) and a few folks with an old version of xfs which will have to updated to the latest xfs version. So if there was a way to do it without copying the data off first, it would be known. I am sorry but that it just one of those nasty facts of life.

if one share is on 2 disks would one file's data be split into the 2 disks or every file is completely on that disk if so i could delete enough data to put everything on one disk and format the other disk

Most of the time the issue is addressed by one of two solutions.

First solution--- add a blank disk to the array large enough to copy everything off of one disk. When that disk is empty, format to the corect and repeat until all disks have been converted. Of course, the method requires acquiring the extra disk...

Second method-- Copy the data off of one disk to the remaining disks in the array. When that disk is empty, reformat it. Then copy data off the next disk to the disk you just formatted. Hopefully everything will fit on that newly formatted disk, otherwise you will be looking for extra space on the other disks. This method may requires some careful planning.

There is a third method. Use the Unassigned Devices plugin and mount a disk either internally or via USB or even remote mount to another computer. Copy the files off of the disk to be converted to the device on the plugin. After formatting empty disk and copy the data back.

what could i do if i have 2 4tb ssds on my array right now that are using exfat and i have 2 spare 2tb hdd how would i copy it because the 2 4tb ssds are not mirrored its both on my share

  • Community Expert

How many SATA ports do you have? (I notice you currently have no parity drive.) Can you add the both the 2tB drives. Format them to a currently supported Unraid format. Copy the data off one of two exFAT drives onto those two drives. Format the now empty drive and copy the data from the other 4TB exFAT drive on that newly formatted drive. Now format the newly emptied drive. Now decide what you want to do with the data on the two 2TB drives.

A complete aside, you do realize that the files on the disks on the Array are formatted using a standard Linus file format. Each file is on only one disk. In fact, you can pull that disk out the Unraid server, plug it into any Linux computer and read all of the data on the disk.

so what new file system would best support all the operating systems and allows me to expand my array in different sizes

  • Community Expert

We typically recommend XFS for the array, but before reformatting the devices, I would recommend testing with a new one to confirm if that is the issue. You can even use a flash drive for that, just add it as a temporary array device formatted as XFS, then set the share to write to that device and confirm if you can now transfer data form Windows.
