NVME vs SATA SSD for write cahe

Featured Replies

Greetings, first time poster here.

Like everyone else. I'm dealing with the high cost of storage during this AI bubble and am wondering if there would be a huge difference in my Unraid performance if I switched my write cache from an NVME to a SATA SSD. I have both here and no real use for the SATA SSD otherwise.

This is just a file storage and media server for the house, nothing super complex, no VMs etc being used.

More knowledgeable and experienced opinions appreciated, thanks.

If you have another use for the nvme, SSD will be fine for Unraid.

The NVME currently in use is a 2TB, while the SATA SSD is a 4TB, so I was thinking a larger cache might come in handy if the speed isn't a big deal.

I would think even a SATA SSD is likely to be faster than your internet or LAN speed which is likely to be the limiting factor in many cases.

NVME is more likely to be beneficial for items that run locally such as VMs or Docker containers.

Thanks for the responses, my connection is 1gig up and down, internal at least in my office with all my machines is 10Gbe.

My router has a couple of 10Gbe ports so it can be run to the rest of the house once they get ethernet upgrades.

Like I posted above, no VMs or dockers for now, but I do a little video editing sometimes, not anything for work. This is all purely for personal use, I don't work in IT etc.

I run 4x SATA SSDs in a RAID10 configuration and have no trouble with speeds.
