June 19, 201214 yr Just a reminder on these drives you gotta to update the firmware to CC4H. Where do you get the firmware? I have numerous of these drives and when I go to seagates website and enter serial number it says no updates available. Sent from my SGH-I727R using Tapatalk 2
June 19, 201214 yr Just search the firmware upgrade CC4H. I stumbled on it in the seagate forum. Model Number Part Number Capacity ST3000DM001 9YN166 3TB ST2500DM001 9YN16L 2.5TB ST2000DM001 9YN164 2TB ST1000DM003 9YN162 1TB Previous versions of firmware with these models and part numbers are CC46, CC47, CC49, CC4C, or CC4G. http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/223651en
June 19, 201214 yr Thanks.. mine all seem to have CC4B as the firmware.... so I assume don't worry about upgrading the firmware?
June 19, 201214 yr Good question...if you aren't experiencing the "chirp noise" you should be good. I just upgraded mine prior to preclearing.
June 20, 201214 yr I am really starting to wonder about these drives. The specs on them are really making them look like "disposable" drives. The 2400-hour specification, which represents only 100 days of continuous operation, assumes that drives are used eight hours per day, five days per week. This, on top of Seagate saying spun down is still considered powered on. All of that on top of only 1 year warranty says to me... "we are selling a product that we don't stand behind and will probably die if you actually use it". and yes i do own several of these drives.. unfortunately. PS the firmware update also fixes the reverse drive activity light glitch.
June 23, 201214 yr I too have a few of these, (5 now). So far the reliability is good. What I do like about them is the speed. These drives preclear in just over 24 hrs, rather than the 37 hrs for a Hitachi 3000.
June 23, 201214 yr Costco Milford, CT has the Seagate USB3 GoDesk for $129.99 + taxes. I bought and took the drive out of the enclosure, it's the ST300DM001 3TB. It seems to run well for me so far. There was no marking about rpm on the drive, but Anandtech review of the drive said it was a 7200rpm unit. The date of manufacture is 04/2012 firmware CC9E. Power down is disabled.

I'm glad a bought several 3tb Hitachi's before the flood and takeover....but I'm wishing I had bought even more. Currently I just have one spun down/precleared as a spare. The current drive situation I find quite disturbing....
