July 25, 201213 yr Planning my revised home network, I will need a new switch (or two). I'm planning on having 2 networks, a DMZ and the regular network, therefore I either need 2 switches or one that supports VLAN (So that I can create 2 VLAN's). I need a totalt of atleast 16 ports (8 for each network preferably) and the ports need to be gigabit. I'd prefer premium products that won't hurt my ping times too much, and then again, I'd like to avoid paying lots of bucks Do you guys have any recommendations?
July 25, 201213 yr HP Procurve 1810G - J9450A. I have two and they're great. If you google around a bit, you'll see many happy owners. Not overly pricey either for what they are (imho.) Was lucky enough to get two on sale at around AUD $260 each. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833316158&Tpk=procurve%20j9450a

July 29, 201213 yr Too many people drop mega bucks on switches/routers for their home networks. Unless your home takes up several city blocks the regular home stuff works just fine. I never caught on why everyone wants this high end stuff for home when most people just browse the web. Right now my switch is just a regular Netgear switch. No UI or anything. Previously I had a an expensive HP switch and didn't notice ANY performance increase/decrease at all when I installed the must less expensive Netgear. Hell, even an old style hub with collisions all over the place I probably even wouldn't be able to tell. Haha.

I did read that a managed switch was necessary for some media streaming processes. However, I'm very happy with the 16-port TP-Link SG1016 I bought a couple of months ago for the equivalent of USD100.

The OP is considering VLANs, so will require a managed switch if that's the path he chooses.

Jumped the gun on responding, but I guess the OP might have a need for it. Could be a hobby or the OP might like to tinker around with stuff like that I guess. Yea, managed switches would be needed of course.

I never caught on why everyone wants this high end stuff for home when most people just browse the web. Went through two D-link gigabit switches and three Netgear gigabit switches. Would run for 4-6 months then all of a sudden either start randomly dropping packets or ports going completely dead. Been going on 3 years with the HP switch now. Could have bought three HP switches for all that I spent on the multiple lower end switches. Had the same problem at work with 24 port "enterprise" linksys gigabit switches. Went through over 15 of them in less then a year, they kept overheating and dropping ports or groups of ports.
