HiSoC8Y
Ok guys, I purchased the parts, and will get the system in few days, and i'll start assembling it. Once all built, what's next? preclear? I have my existing NAS, where I would want to move all that data to the new system. what's the procedure? also, preclear, i saw that it takes around 30+ hours for each drive, and my system will be having around 7 x 3 TB drives...so that will be in days...is that normal? here is a link of my system http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=21470.0 Link to comment
Helmonder
That is an impressive setup ! Success and make some photo's of your build ! When you have ensembled the system then first step will need to be preclear..: Multiple pre-clearing cycles are good, 3 is a good number. They will however take a lot of time. Note that if you start preclear by telnetting into the server from your pc the preclearing is dependent on your pc continuing to work (a reboot of your windows box will stop the preclear, this can be prevented by using "SCREEN" (it will make sure the preclear will continue even with your windows box shut down) The following commands will have you covered on both (3 cycles with screen and sending reports on progress by email): cd /boot screen ./preclear_disk.sh -M 3 -c 3 /dev/sd<diskletter> You can run several preclears at the same time like this. And indeed, this will take a loooooong time.. Preclearing one 3TB drive like this took me 3 days. It really is a good idea though, it will save you trouble lateron.. Link to comment
BetaQuasi
As far as moving your existing NAS' content.. really depends on what type of NAS it is. With my ReadyNAS's, I enabled NFS, then mounted the shares directly in the /mnt folder in unRaid, then rsync'ed all the files across directly from the NAS to unRaid. I'd consider this one of the most efficient methods. Link to comment
dikkiedirk
First thing is preparing an unraid stick, booting from it and run memtest a night or maybe 24 hours. And yes, preclearing is a long, tedious job, but start with 3 or 4 at once on the M1015 controller, giving it a bit of testing too. Is the M1015 flashed already? I know, you like te server up and running the moment you have finished building it, but be prepared to do some testing too. Link to comment

Plus most electronics, if faulty, will fail early in their life, so test and stress them now. It has saved more than one member from losing a drive later on, putting their data at risk should another drive fail before a replacement could be installed. Link to comment

I'm thinking before putting this system into production, I'll announce on the forum that I will do all the testing that people require. Thanks guys! just got my first shipment today....it's a hassle actually for me, I had to ship it to my US address, then forward it to my home (Dubai, UAE). Link to comment
