Is unRAID right for me? My specific use case

Featured Replies

After some time researching the various storage systems available I am narrowing my choices down, but I'm still not sure that unRAID is right for me over, say a Synology NAS.

I will be using the storage system for media exclusively. Serving it up from my basement to no fewer than 5 rooms (though it will be rare that more than two are use concurrently) over Cat6. I currently have a Vortexbox to rip my media which is internally stored on a 2 tb drive in the Vortexbox.

For anyone unfamiliar with a Vortexbox, it really is a great piece of kit.

My question is...

Does unRAID have the capability to copy the ripped files off of my Vortexbox onto the unRAID drives and then erase them from the Vortexbox once they are copied?

Does the unRAID box have the capability to be accessed over the internet? I am assuming Plex allows you to access your media remotely as well as transcoding on-the-fly.

Thanks

Unraid can run shell scripts, so if it can be done with a script, yes. To directly answer your question, stock unraid doesn't have a built in button or function to do what you want without customization.

No. It's not a hardened server meant to be exposed to the internet in its stock form. To remotely serve media over the internet, you would need to supply a secure path in the form of a VPN, or other such connection. It would definitely work out of the box if you forwarded the appropriate ports, but you would be allowing anybody on the internet a possible path inside your network.

Thanks for the reply.

Sounds like its a Synology NAS for me.

Sounds like its a Synology NAS for me.

Any specific reason you would like to give us?

What will you do when you run out of space?

Synology---Buy a new disk to replace an old disk.

unRaid---Add a new disk to the current disks.

I would rather add than replace which is my unRaid replaced my Synology 211J.

Shouldn't that be:

Synology---Buy new disks to replace all old disks.

Also the synology costs you (for a 5 drive without the hds) more than double an unraid system. And as others have said. It's harder to add drives. Actually impossible for the synology.
