Hey everybody,

I stumbled upon this thread, because I recently setup an Unraid server and have an old Syno Box, which I want to backup to the Unraid Box.

So I followed @bung's post here. It seems to work, because when I input my info into the rsync dialogue the Backupmoduels from Unraud are loaded, here "backups" (screenshot).

However, when I click continue (after choosing the backup sources) I get an error message like "This operation cannot be carried out. Please try again later."

Does anyone have an idea how I can fix this, or even in what logs I might find some info on the exact error that is occuring?

  • So, it appears if you upgrade to 6.8, you'll need to change your /boot/config/go script to say:   bash /boot/custom/etc/rc.d/S20-init.rsyncd

Hey. Its 2025 calling and I followed the instructions of @bung .

Please check your rsync config file!!!!
When I used the one from I ran into issues. The folder was not completly recognized, etc.

Please try

[backups]
path = /mnt/user/backups
comment = Backups
read only = FALSE

when I had the white spaces behind the paths it all collapsed. Now Im writing my backup. Thank you all, especially bung. But maybe consider to correct the code, please.

Have a nice day.

4. Type your Rsync config. As a guide use the below example, modified from @WeeboTech

uid             = root
gid             = root
use chroot      = no
max connections = 4
pid file        = /var/run/rsyncd.pid
timeout         = 600

[backups] # Rsync Modual name (basicaly Rsync share name) Synology hyperbackup calls this "Backup Modual"
    path = /mnt/user/backups # Unraid share location. /mnt/user/YOURSHARENAME could also be a subdirectory of a share
    comment = Backups # Modual Description
    read only = FALSE

[vmware] # Add multiple Rsync moduals as required
    path = /mnt/user/backups/vmware
    comment = VMWare Backups
    read only = FALSE

Well, it's for Unraid V5 and older.

So probably 5 to 10 years old. Not that surprising that it is not working great in 2025.

Hello,

late 2025 i done your guide Bung (twice) to be honest (https://forums.unraid.net/topic/2100-rsync/page/2/#findComment-819926), but synology is telling me that it can't connect to destination backup folder (like on picture). I'm on 7.1.4. I've checked already SMB Permissions (export on/off, private/secured/public) nothing helps. It sees both modules "backups" and "vmware" but when i press on one of them i get this message (same as if i click on next).
