My planned structure of my shares...what split level???

Featured Replies

ok

my system is ready, and I'm planning to move my data, but before that, I need to start the array and set the split level.

My structure will be like this:

multimedia (root level)

-movies

--movie-folder (and all movie files go inside this)

-documentaries

--documentary-movie (and all movie files go inside this)

-tv shows

--show name

---season # (and all season files go inside this)

-others

--folder (and all movie files go inside this)

I want to have each movie with it's associated files on the same disk.  So for this structure, what will be the split level?

I would move tv to its own share as it is the only one with 3 levels.  Then I'd set the multimedia to split level 2, and tv to split level 3.

This way the movies folder could be on any disk but each individual movie and its content would be on the same disk.

With tv each series could be on any disk but individual seasons would reside on the same disk.

Or, if you want to keep a single root share, add a base category to everything else besides tv, like this...

multimedia

-movies

--documentary

---documentary-movie (contains files)

--hollywood

---movie (contains files)

--miscellaneous

---uncategorized stuff (contains files)

-TVShows

--Show name

---seasons (contains files)

That way split 3 should work for everything.

I didn't think about that. I micro manage my data too much lol

For the TV shows, each season will have it's own folder.  so split level 3 will be ok?

Well, i decided to make this structure

TV Shows

>Show Title

>>Season 01

and i selected to use only disk5,disk6,disk7....with a split level 2.

i started the transfer of my data, and i found that the files inside the season folder is getting across all the three disks.

why is that?

I wanted to have each season and it's content on the same disk.

Did you read the Shares info in the unofficial manual? If not, take a look in the wiki.

Use split level 1.

Well, i did read the un-official, and spend hours reading it.

check this part

For Movies use a split level = 2. This allows the "SD Movies", "HD Movies" and "Kids Movies" folders to be placed on every disk and it keeps each individual movie folder on a single disk. This way, any single movie folder and the contents of the movie folder will remain on a single disk.
For TV_Shows use a split level of either 1 or 2. A split level of 1 will keep each TV series on a single disk and split level of 2 will keep each season on a single disk. The split level of 2 means that the complete TV series can be stored on multiple disks, however each individual season of that TV series will be on a single disk.

It says that if i use split 2, each season will be on the same disk.  but this is not exactly what happened, files in season folder was spread on different disks.

Ok

If i decide to have this structure in this picture:

Is it possible? if so, what will be the split level?

I don't mind each movie folder to be spread across disks, but I want the content of each movie folder (video file. image, poster, nfo) to be on the same disk

same thing with tv shows, i don't mind to have different shows on different disks, but I want each tv season folder contents to be on the same disk.  That means, I don't mean to have "Entourage" show on different disks, but i want to have each season (e.g. season 1), and all of it's contents on the same disk.

Split level is the deepest level that you want to split. In the example, Movies needs a split of 2

This statement is a bit confusing. Do you want Entourage to reside on a single disk or can it be split? It looks like you don't want Entourage to split. If not, then why mention season? If Entourage is not split then its contents, e.g. season, are not going to split. For TV, a split of 2 will keep Entourage on a single disk. A split level of 3 will keep each season on a single disk.

If you select 2 Movies will work but Entourage will be kept on a single disk. If you choose 3 Entourage will split but season will not and Movies will need another level to work correctly, e.g., Media->Movies->Movies->Bad Boys.

There is another option to use a character to indicate split level. E,g, use '*' as the split level. Then rename Movies as Movies* and rename Entourage as Entourage*

Your first test, are you sure you weren't seeing different seasons on different disks.

2 is the only valid setting for that picture you posted unless the movies are just individual files in that Movies directory and then 3 would also be valid.

Yes i'm sure, but i know what i did then.  I selected the "most free" method when i saw all those file spread.

So for the picture (example) i posted, 2 will work? each movie folder will remain on a disk (and the movie content will remain together)?  Also, the TV series will be spread, but each season folder and it's content will remain on a single disk?

The split level comes first and then the allocation method is used. Either your directory structure wasn't what you stated or the share wasn't set to level 2 at some point when you were testing.

As for the new question, Each movie folder and each complete series will remain on a single disk using level 2.

Lionel,

I tried the level 2, but it was not keeping all tv season content on the same disk. I used "high water" method.

I have my TV series as a share called TV_Series using split level 1. All of my complete TV series stay on a single disk. From your description, you are placing the same  TV_Series directory I'm using 1 level deeper under a share called Media. So, level 2 would be correct in your case since it's one directory deeper and level 2 would keep each complete TV series on a single disk. If it's not working, then I'd have to think you're doing something wrong. I haven't read any other complaints of the split level not working on the forum.

Try posting screen shots of your share directories and your settings screens and describe how you're moving the files to the share.
