How much UPS?

Featured Replies

Everything is going great with my new build but I think I would feel a lot better with a UPS. Last night it started storming so I shut down the array and turned it off. Cyberpower looks like an affordable option but I'm not sure how much I need. Am I right in the fact that the only two things that would need backing up are my unraid server and htpc? TV, Router, AVR, Amp, Power Sub all should be fine on just a surge protector?

If you are considering using a single UPS to shutdown both computers, you will need to keep the entire network up with the exception of the modem.  (One computer monitors the the UPS for a power outage and that computer signals the other one to shutdown.)    Shutting down unRAID properly is a crucial operation in cases of a power failure.  (Just read the board for posts from people seeking help after unprotected power outage!)

Personally, I would go for two UPS's --- one for each computer.  If I could only afford to protect one, it would be the unRAID computer.  Recent versions of Windows seem much more tolerant of barefoot power outages then unRAID.

You really should have a UPS and not just for the stormy days.  Over the years, I have had a lot of clear weather power outages of just a few seconds.  Not long enough to trigger a shutdown but long enough to crash an unprotected computer.

So obviously I would want the sever, htpc and router with backup power. Any reason to not have all 3 hooked up to the UPS? They are within 4 ft of each other.

Nope.  But I would suggest that you start your research on how to set everything up as it not straight forward.  I  have seen some posts on this board about controlling two or more computers connected to a single UPS but I never read them carefully enough to even tell you where to begin.

From what I have read the plugin for APC works with cyberpower, but obviously I would have to have a function in windows 7 to do the same for the htpc.

What I have come across now seems to say that apcupsd can run on the htpc as a master and a second device as a slave, but #1 does the unraid version have this option and #2 does anyone have this working with a non APC UPS.

If this is useful as a reference, I have an APC SUA1500.  It was used and I just had to get batteries or I probably would have got something more like an APC 1000VA.  With the unRAID server, my PC and a router / switch connected the 1500 is at 20% load and says it will last just under an hour.  I am sure it is much less if it unRAID was running a parity check.  I just have it shut down the server when it is down to 33% battery remaining.  Not so worried about the PC.

Have not tried this with non APC UPS but I can confirm that master/slave works. I have the UPS data connected to my unRAID box and my PC is also running apcupsd but it is set to get the data over the network from unRAID (router is also on the UPS).

So in your set up using an APC UPS, the UPS gives a shutdown command to the Unraid server via USB, and in tern the apcupsd sends a shutdown command to the PC via LAN? Is this based on the PC running Windows 7? Also generally my HTPC is in S3 most of the day, how would that effect it?

Yes that is how it works and I am running Windows 7 on the PC. apcupsd has a system tray notifier on the PC and it tells me when unRAID signals a change with the UPS. Haven't tested it with S3 yet.

Anyone on ideas? If Windows 7 machine is in s3 and unraid array is online, how to wake the win 7 machine and trigger shutdown?

Have you gone to the APC site and look for an answer there?  (I have a feeling you will be running the APC software on the Win7 Machine.)

Well I have it all figured out to shutdown both, however now my concern in to be able to wake the win 7 machine from s3, I have to assume someone out there has a machine that stays in s3 that they have connected to a ups.  Alternatively I could just have the UPS shut down the unraid server, if the htpc is in s3 then it should last days at its level over power draw right?
