3 passes preclear is this normal?

Featured Replies

I started a 3 pass preclear a couple of days a go on a 2 TB drive. Now after 51 hours it is at 66 % in the 3rd pass post-read at 66%. Is this normal?

yes.

Thanks Joe,

I'll report back later with full results incl. SMART report.

This is a problem disk where SMART showed 15 reallocated sectors before doing the preclear. See if this has worsened.

I just posted about one of my disks here:

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=23792.0

It too already had a number of reallocated sectors.  8)    After the test it had one additional sector pending re-allocation.

It has been the drive I have used many time previously in testing the preclear script.    I was testing using badblocks, as I want to include it as an option in the preclear script.  It took 64 hours to write and verify the disk 4 times.  (about 16 hours per value)

Would you put such a drive in an array? It's a Hitachi 7k2000 out of warranty.

Cool Joe !  I just picked up a new WD 3TB RED... Shall I wait a day or so for you to make the new preclear version ?  Would be happy to test..

These are the reports of the drive. Please give me your opinion. Can it still serve as an array-drive?

Drive looks fine, but it should be monitored due to its age.

I would not put the drive Joe described into an array. If you keep getting pending sectors then you can lose data when another drive fails. Basically, the bad sector will cause a failure in rebuilding the corresponding sector on the drive being rebuilt.

I have so much going on in my life I doubt it will be ready by Christmas...  I'm planning on an entirely new re-organization of the program... to make it easier to call from a plugin.    The bad news is that the more extensive test takes longer.    As I said earlier, the 4-value write/verify single pass took 64 hours on a 2TB drive.  I would want to perform a single read pass prior the read/write destructive pass to have the equivalent of the preclear routine today, so that would add about another 8 hours or so.  (72 hours for a 2TB drive.)

Just think, there are those complaining about the current routine's time duration  ;).      A 3TB drive might end up needing 4 days to complete.  8)

I'll use the current version then :-)

Butteh... I do totally not care about the time the test takes... I am in the habbit of allways having one drive NOT in the array, just sitting there, precleared and ready.. As soon as a drive shows failure signs I take the array down, pull the plugs on the failing drive and activate the new one... I would not mind if a preclear would take a week.. Thanks for all your efforts !

Me neither.  A thorough test will always take a long time.  A quick test can be useful but can often lead to a false sense of security.

Thanks for all your efforts !

Absolutely.  This forum would be far less useful, Joe, without your many valuable contributions.

dikkiedirk,

Your drive has no pending sectors. It looks fine.

I didn't post that his did....

I also wouldn't trust a disk with pending sectors. I had some bad experiences with some WD20EARS: started with a few pending sectors, but like an avalanche their count grew till the disk was RMA'd.

The disk that I now have has been added to the array. The last time I checked there are still no pending sectors and the other values stay the same. Keeping an eye on it though.
