Connecting UnRaid Server as a USB drive

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have done a couple of searches of the forum but can't find an answer to this question.

Is there any way to connect an UnRaid server via USB, so that it acts like a USB connected storage device. Basically I want to stream 24/192 music files to a streamer than can only take the format from a USB connected drive.

Thanks in advance,

It may be possible, but it has not ever been tried to my knowledge. The info I can find on it seems to indicate a need for extra hardware, as the USB host ports on a PC were never meant to act as slave devices, and then there would be the need to add the code to unraid to allow it to talk to the new hardware. Unless you have either unlimited time and vast programming knowledge, or lots of money to pay someone to implement it, I don't see it happening.

Bugger! That's a shame. I guess I'll have to get a separate USB capable NAS drive then, and just have it back up to my UnRaid server.

See here: http://usbip.sourceforge.net/

and basic instructions for ubuntu (not directly usable, but it shows the modules needed by the kernel)

Unfortunately, all solutions I've seen require additional driver modules on the client (streamer) and linux server.

Ive never see a USB (server) capable NAS drive.  Just searched, and I did not find any on Amazon, or on google.

It would be easier to replace your streamer.  (Which streamer?  perhaps it has other connectivity capabilities you could use?)

Try a raspberry pi for a cheap xbmc option:

There is (possibly was) a USB stick you can buy that works like you're asking. You configure it and then when you plug it into a USB port it appears just like a USB thumb drive even though the data is coming from a wireless network share. I don't have the link here and it's rather pricy at >$100 but I'll try to find the link at home.

Edit - Found the link if it works. Can't access it at work to test. Seems to have dropped to around $60.
