January 14, 201313 yr Is there a step-by-step guide for replacing an existing parity drive one one of larger capacity under 5.10.RC? Is this a well-worn path, or will I be pioneering to any degree? Should I start by running a Parity Check under 5.10.RC? The previous one (Dec 31 under 4.7.0) was o.k. Do I need to pre-clear the new 3TB drive? Thank you. 5.10.Syslog-2013-01-13.txt
January 14, 201313 yr Couldn't hurt to run another parity check with RC10 and you'll want to pre-clear the 3TB 3 times to ensure it's good. As i remember to upgrade the parity disk you just turn off the array, power down, swap the drives then boot back up. It'll whine that the parity disk is missing and just select the new one and rebuild parity onto the new drive.
January 14, 201313 yr Do another parity check, you've probably written to the array since the last parity check. You will want to preclear the disk - I did mine 5x. Then do what Dephcon said, and after your done you will want to do a non-correcting parity check again.
January 15, 201313 yr And yes, it's a well-worn path. Many of us have done it, sometimes several times.

It is necessary though to stop the array first and restart after the swap.
January 15, 201313 yr Author Thanks for the advice. The parity check ran o.k. last night, so I 'll start pre-clearing the new 3TB disk now.
January 18, 201313 yr Perfect timing for this thread... I am about to do the same thing but reading the forum, I realize that I first need to upgrade from 4.7 to 5.0r8+ to use a 3TB HDD, which makes this other thread Upgrade from 4.7 to 5.0-rc10 also relevant to my needs ... thanks guys for great support on the forum. BTW, I decided to once again use a Seagate for the parity and Western Digital for all other drives (all green 5400 rpm), in case one manufacturer starts having quality problems like Seagate did with their 1 TB drives. This way, the likely hood of two different brands crashing at the same time is minimized... I hope!

In 5.0 you can 'warm swap' hard drives, meaning with array Stopped, you can physically connect/disconnect SATA drives. After doing so, hit refresh on the browser to have unRaid recognize the drive change. Don't do this with array Started however.
January 19, 201313 yr Never upgrade to any 5.0 release earlier than the latest release. I understand and agree with that. Good advice. I am using 5.0rc8 which is working for me on server 2 and I see some problems with rc10 that I prefer not to deal with on a working system.
