January 24, 201313 yr I have 2 - ST3000DM001 Seagate 3TB drives. One is partiy, other is currently set up as a warm spare. I am about to get another one. Newegg has a deal through the 28th for $129 (code EMCXWVV23 if interested). However, this drive used to have great ratings and now down to 3 of 5 eggs. I haven't had a day of issue with either of mine, granted one is not really being used. The newer reviews are a lot of DOA / or early failure. Both of mine precleared (I think i did 3 cycles). It is a newer design, 1 TB platter, so was curious if anyone else was having issues? I'm inclined to go ahead with another and just run 3 cycles again before putting in service, but would change plans if others are having issues here. *** I just realized i put this in the wrong section. I don't think i can move it so if a mod wants to.....
January 24, 201313 yr Mine perform very well! I'm very happy with them. I get awesome speeds with them.
January 24, 201313 yr Have had no issues with it, using it as the parity drive. Picked it up for $90 at newegg last month.
January 24, 201313 yr These are the cheapest on the market around here. Aas it looks, there are two different version/sub-models of the same drive out there. The first is a -9YN166 model and can be upgraded to the latest firmware CC4H from seagate website, which appears to be required in order make it a stable workhorse. I have 5 of these in my array, coming from two different fabs (china & thailand) The second is a 1CH166 model....these come with firmware CC24 which, by its number is older than the actual one from seagate, although drives appear to be manufactured brand new. And these, you cannot upgrade....seagate FW-tool will refuse to run on these (see here, or google for more: http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Barracuda-XT-Barracuda-Barracuda/9YN166-vs-1CH166/td-p/182266) I also have another 5 of them in my server, also coming from fabs in china & thailand. I have no issues with both submodels so far. Seagate online check issues a valid warranty to all of them, so I am a happy camper.

Thanks for that info. Just checked it looks like the one I have is the 1CH166. Came with a 2 year warranty.

Do these part numbers relate to the 7200.14 or 7200.12 generation information? I dont see how to tell which part number i'm getting. Thanks
January 24, 201313 yr I simply assumed this is about the latest generation 7200.14 At least this is what seagate issues for mine when I enter my serial(s) into their warranty check. As I do live in another part of the world, I cannot judge what models/part numbers are actual at your place. All of mine were sold as ST3000DM001...this is about the only information you get from the shops here. And when parts arrive it is "happy easter" time as by then you'll find out what kind of egg it really is

January 25, 201313 yr I am running about 9 of these in my main unRAID box for about 9 months now. This includes one for parity (it was much was faster then the hitachi 7200 I had in there). so far not one reportable error. I did have to update the firmware on all of my drives. I also have 6 of the 2TB version. 4 in a ZFS1 array and 2 spares JOB that i use for scratch drives (and cold spares should I need them...) again no reportable errors. they are fast..... but the warranty is poor and they are not rated for 24x7 operation (turn on your power management)... I bought them for price.. so far so good.
January 27, 201313 yr I also have 2 of the ST3000DM001 in my server, as well as 2 of the ST2000DM001. So far so good here as well, not a single error, but it's only been a little over 2 months. I updated the firmware on all 4 to CC4H. FWIW, I purchased the 3TB drives from Amazon and the 2TB drives from Newegg. All disks have a 2 year warranty (actually 25 months from purchase date), as reported by Seagate's warranty check on their website.
January 29, 201313 yr If you look at the negative reviews of a lot of the drives on Newegg, they come from people using them RAID 5 arrays and the drives are failing prematurely because they are not intended to be used this way. You really need to use enterprise class drives for a RAID 5 array. The problem is they are a lot more expensive, which is why WD created the Red series of drives. RAID 5 capable firmwire in a drive that is priced more in the consumer range. However, people are inevitably still going to buy consumer class drives and have them fail because those are the ones that go on the best sales so people will buy a bunch. If you could somehow filter out the negative reviews that mention RAID 5 I think most drives would have a lot higher reviews. Fortunately because of the way unraid operates we don't experience the same type of conditions that cause drive failures that RAID 5 users experience.
