slow speeds when connecting from my Mac.

Featured Replies

I did a couple tests on my unraid server, before my main HDDs come in, using a 35Gb mvk blu-ray file and an 8gb folder (test hdds are old and only sata 2).

In windows I transfered the file from my computer (windows using tera copy) to my unraid server and I was getting around 30mb/s if I remember correctly. then I watched the movie with xbmc and had no problems. then I tried downloading the 8gb folder and got pretty good speeds about 34mb/s.

On my mac I watched the movie and every minute or two the movie would have to buffer which to me is unwatchable. So with the 8gb folder It took over 30 minutes to transfer it to my Mac.

As you can see I am getting much slower speeds on my Mac and I was just wondering how I can fix this so I am able to watch movies and transfer files at a reasonable speed.

Oh ya and all of this is being done connecting through SMB. I tried to connect through afp but I could not get my mac to connect through it.

AFP performs better on a Mac. Make it work.

Increase the buffer size in XBMC.

Make sure nothing else is running on the Mac.

Use "Blackmagic Disk Speed Test" in the Mac App store (free) to test the server speed.

any ideas on how to make afp work? and all that is running on my mac is itunes, safari, and mail, but none of this should make it not work well. Its a 2012 macbook pro 13'' with 16gb of ram. I will try to increase the buffer size on xbmc and see if that helps any, but back when I just had my external HDD connected to my HTPC and sharing the drive on the home network I never had any problems like this.

well I connected through afp and I am getting 6.5MB read and write, about 3MB better than through smb so still not good enough, any ideas?

How are you connecting the Mac to the network?

what do you mean, like physical connection?

Cable or wireless?

wireless

wireless

You most likely have a wireless issue.  Wireless connections are not really that reliable.  The frequency bands used are shared with (and subject to interference by) cordless phones, microwave ovens, and every other wireless router in your immediate area.  The data rate is also affected by the signal strength which is related to the distance and and number of the walls (as well as the type of construction) between the router and your computer.    Post up your wireless router information  and someone who is familiar with that unit may be able to provide further information.

well I tried it with a wired connection and I get about 54MB write and 103MB read through afp. So I guess it has to do with the wireless. But one thing that I do not get is that when I had my HTPC (running windows 7) sharing a drive (SMB) connected through USB 2.0 I had no problem watching my movies wirelessly with the same modem/router (I'm a college student and renting a house so Im not going to buy a router). This is why I think it is a setting with unraid  and not a problem with the router.

Oh ya and signal strength is not a problem my Mac is about 15 feet away from the router.

Here is the specs on the router.

Brand: Cisco

Model: DPC3825

Anyone have any ideas?

Use a cable and stop wearing chain mail. It really messes up wifi.

Ok first off this post is no help at all. Please don't post if you don't have anything to contribute. The point of having wifi is to be able to use your computer "wirelessly" so using a cable is pointless!

Now does anyone else on here have any ideas for me to try? I have had a transfer going to my unraid server from my mac and I am getting about 7mb/s transfer speed which is to slow, and only about 800kb/s when trying to watch a movie from the server which is way to slow.

Like mentioned above wireless is not reliable.  Count yourself lucky it worked with Windows.  I would never expect a high bitrate file to stream without issue ovcer wireless.

Wire it up and call it a day.

I had it working when I was sharing my drive through windows 7. I was getting way over triple what I'm getting now through SMB so the only thing that I can think of is that it is a problem with unraid. For the last time I AM NOT GOING TO USE AN ETHERNET CORD!!! that is the point of having a laptop with wireless capabilities. So please if you're going to say use an ethernet cord just don't post anything.

Is the windows 7 share still running just as fast? Can you do a back to back test with the same file on each system?

its not running anymore the motherboard went bad so that is one of the reasons I moved to unraid, that and I was running out of space. but Im sure I could set a different one up rather quickly. I will try it and see what kind of speeds I get with it.

Attach a syslog that include a period with a slow transfer.
