February 20, 201313 yr I'm having some problems with my server, so I'm trying to figure out if the RAM is causing any of my problems. However, I can't run memtest. When I select Memtest86+ from the Lime Technology menu, it just restarts my server. I made sure the memtest file was located in the root directory of my flash drive. I also checked my syslinux.cfg file to make sure memtest is there (this is what is there): default menu.c32 menu title Lime Technology LLC prompt 0 timeout 50 label unRAID OS menu default kernel bzimage append initrd=bzroot label Memtest86+ kernel memtest Still can't run memtest, so I thought maybe I needed the latest version of memtest (I'm running unRAID v4.7) and the last time I upgraded unRAID from v4.6, I didn't update memtest or anything. The upgrade instruction seemed to say it wasn't necessary and that the AiO install just included the latest version. Anyhow, I decided to go to the memtest86+ website (www.memtest.org) and I downloaded the latest precompiled bootable binary (.gz) file. Then I extracted the memtest.bin file to the root directory of my flash drive. I booted up unRAID and after logging on, from the system console typed: cd /boot rm memtest mv memtest.bin memtest Then I restarted and tried running memtest from the Lime Technology menu again. Again, it just restarted my PC. Is there something I'm doing wrong here?
February 20, 201313 yr Disconnect everything leaving only RAM and CPU connected. Try with a single RAM stick or replace the current one. The memtest must be successful.
February 20, 201313 yr Author Disconnect everything leaving only RAM and CPU connected. Try with a single RAM stick or replace the current one. The memtest must be successful. Did exactly as you said. After disconnecting all my drives: First, I tried with both sticks installed - memtest won't run. Next, one stick - memtest won't run. Swap to other stick - memtest won't run. I tried moving the stick from one socket to the other, memtest still won't run. I know at least one of these sticks has to be ok, because with either one installed, I can boot up and run unRAID. If they were defective, I shouldn't even be able to boot up. I must not have the memtest utility installed correctly.
February 20, 201313 yr Try and download stand-alone copy of memtest86 http://www.memtest.org/#downiso There's USB and CD versions to try.
February 20, 201313 yr Author In another thread primarily dealing with a different issue, I was told to try to use a different flash drive. When I recently upgraded from unRAID Plus to unRAID Pro, I also switched from a 128MB flash drive to a 16GB flash drive (the Pro key was tied to the GUID of the new 16GB flash drive). I still have unRAID Plus on the 128MB flash drive, so I plugged it in and restarted my server. Now memtest runs fine. So I can now let it run for several cycles to test my RAM. In the mean time, I'll try to figure out why it won't run on my 16GB drive.
February 20, 201313 yr Copy memtest from the distro archive over the memtest on your flash drive. Sounds like a corrupted or old/outdate memtest version - by copying from distro archive - you will be getting the correct version designed for the current release. Myk
February 22, 201313 yr Author I'm not sure what you are talking about. I installed the latest download of unRAID v4.7 when I got a key for this USB flash drive last Fall. It was the zip file named 'unRAID Server 4.7 AiO.zip'. I've used my other flash drive ever since I first purchased unRAID many years ago and it has been upgraded incrementally every time a new version has reached a full stable release. I haven't installed any betas or release candidates. I think during this time I've maybe upgraded the memtest utility once. So there's a chance my old flash drive had an older version of memtest, but it is very unlikely that my 16Gb flash drive has an older outdated memtest version. Anyhow, I went to the memtest website and made sure I had the latest version and installed it on my flash drive. I have v4.2 installed. It didn't work either. Please let me know if there is a later version or if there is a different version designed to work with unRAID v4.7. Since they are independent programs and memtest doesn't run in unRAID, I'm not sure why there'd be any compatibility issues. I've run chkdsk to see if that identifies any problems with the flash drive and it didn't. I ran chkdsk on the memtest file and it indicated that the file had 2 non-contiguous blocks. So I ran a defrag utility on the drive and ran chkdsk on the memtest file again. After the defrag, it no longer reported any non-contiguous blocks. However, memtest still won't run from this flash drive. Maybe I should try installing memtest v4.2 on my old flash drive. If it doesn't work with my old flash drive, then there might be some compatibility problems with my system bios. I can't test this theory for awhile because I'm running a pre-clear session and have a bunch of other problems to deal with. Besides, I was able to run memtest using my old flash drive and after over 24 hours of testing, there were no errors reported, so I'll just move on to the next task. Eventually, I'd like to have a working copy of memtest on my 16Gb flash drive. So if anyone can figure out how to make it work, I'm love to learn the solution. The unRAID server OS seems to run fine from this flash drive, but the fact that memtest doesn't has me a little worried about its reliability and I'm wondering if my other problems are related in any way.
February 22, 201313 yr The version tested to work with your version of unRaid is in the archive file - extract it somewhere on your windows machine, and in that folder is a memtest file, copy that file over the memtest on your flash drive that does not work and then boot and see what happens.... Myk

Myk What archive file are you referring to? Where can I find it?
February 22, 201313 yr Author I already have downloaded the zip file (which I thought I mentioned in an earlier post) and installed that copy of memtest. That was the version that was originally on my flash drive. It doesn't work.
