March 14, 201313 yr I need some advise or tip. Here in Germany electricity is extremely expensive. So I do start my two unRAID servers (MD-1500LL and MD-1510LL) every evening and stop them in the night. I do this since 2008 and I don't see any negative impact. Stopping an unRAID server is easy - I do it with the Web-GUI. To start the machines I need to push the button physically - I have to walk downstairs to the basement every evening. So I bought a PDU (http://www.koukaam.se/showproduct.php?article_id=1502). But switching the port to ON does not start the server - the button still needs to be pushed. Is there a way to start the unRAID server as soon as electricity is switched on? I did some tests to start the machines over the network but I could not get it to work. I simply became lost in the settings (BIOS, etc). Any help is highly appreciated. Regars Harald

I know in my BIOS the options are "Always ON", "Always OFF" and "Last State".
March 14, 201313 yr Author Thanks for your answer. I just googled for "Power State". It seems this is only for power outages and defines what should happen if power is on again after an outage. If I shutdown an unRAID server by Web-GUI I need to wait some time until I can close the PDU slot, else I would crash the machine during shutdown. Power is on during shutdown. Hmm, after reading some docs i don't think that this setting will start a machine (that was shutdown savely) when power is switched on again. What do you think? Thanks Harald
March 14, 201313 yr Try this: https://www.remotepowerswitch.com/reboot-atx.html Or get a MB with IPMI or investigate sleep and WOL.

Thanks Harald Look in your BIOS (or motherboard Documentation) for information about exactly what the options of YOUR motherboard are with regard to what happens when power is restored. Every motherboard does NOT have the same options. The motherboard in my testbed server has an option to restart when the power comes back on. (Remember, shutting down your computer does NOT turn all the power off!!! The power supply is still active and supplies power to maintain the system in its 'shutdown' state. That is why WOL works.) If the documentation refers to AC power that is exactly what is talking about, not the DC side of the power supply is all that is partially turned off when a normal shutdown occurs.
March 14, 201313 yr Author Thanks for your tips. Will read more details for my two motherboards. I remember that I tried WOL several times and had no success so far. This was the reason to buy this PDU. Seems that this was a stupid investment. However, I can still use it to start and stop my USB devices in combination with my "Sharkoon USB LAN Port 400" ... Regards Harald
