//tower used to work...

Also, i can't access the share folders in Windows Explorer. The only way to get to the webgui is by the ip address. Everything was fine yesterday so I'm not sure what happened...

A. Isn't it \\? \\Tower\, \\ marking it as a share, tower being the DNS name and \ being the root directory? Not //

B. Try in your browser, http://tower/

C. Did you change any DNS settings on your browser/computer/router/unraid box?

If you have assigned you server a fixed IP address, the server may not be the your router's table of 'names' that are used to resolve names to

IP addresses.  If that is the case, you will have to use the IP address for your browser to gain access.

i have the unraid box permanently at 192.168.1.199 and that's how i gain access to it with my browser. my concern is that i've lost access to the share folders. I didn't do anything for this to happened....so confused.

Use \\192.168.1.199 to access the shares.

//192.168.1.199 accesses the webGUI.  Note the slashes.

If that does not work I would connect a monitor to the unraid and see that it really starts up..

I have had the same problem when the unraid starts the scheduled parity check.

I just "Have that issue". My operating system (so it seems) doesn't seem to respect local hostnames, which is saddening. Oh well, I never use hostnames on windows anyway, fixed IPs are so much easier.

It also helps if you set your server's 'Local Master' setting to 'Yes'.  You will find this setting under 'Settings/SMB'.    It also helps if you shutdown EVERYTHING (including media server boxes-- These are all running Linux SMB and many of them can end up being the Master Browser) except for your server after making the change.  Then power everything back up.  Don't be in a hurry as it can take a long time to get everything to settle down.  (Read the times intervals for the various client/Master Browser communication packets. )
