HDD temp in a full Norco SS-500 ?

Featured Replies

hi

What HDD temperatures are folks seeing in a full (all 5 disks populated) Norco SS-500 rack ?

I have a rack with 4HDD's and each disk is like > 60C..

My system is like 35C, (cpu and motherboard) as I have side, rear and top cooling..

even a lone drive in another rack is like 30C

Do you have any forced air-flow through the disk cage?

I have iStarUSA cages - ambient temperature yesterday was 33C, highest drive temperature was 40C.

Is the fan running? I never saw temperatures that I high when I had an SS-500.

I will check... tomorrow.

The Fan was running last time I checked,

Actually the system is in my garage, and its like 20C outside, I dont see why the temps should stay at 60C

I will update this tomorrow...

swapped out the drives to the other cage I have online, temperatures seem to have dropped to 50's

The disks were hot.... so something is fishy somewhere..

Anyone used WD4001FAEX ?

I think this is a airflow problem, I made/modded the case a bit to have +ve pressure, and it seems that is causing reduced airlow in the rack which has all the disks..

I will install some WDEARS in the other rack in the next few days so we will see if this is a HDD problem.

the WDEARS seems to be staing at 44C in a poorly cooled machine

I currently have 1 Norco SS-500, which had my 3TB 7200 rpm parity drive.  The only time my temps go up to 44C is when running a parity check.

I would be checking ASAP or shutting the server down - 60 degrees is BAD for hard disks, most vendors suggest that is the absolute maximum operating temperature.

I have two ss-500s with 8 drives. Each case has a SWiF 800 (not 801) fan for lower decibels.

First cage left to right: wd 3tb red, wd 1tb black, 3tb red, 3tb red,  wd 2tb green

Second cage: wd 1tb datastore, blank, wd 2tb green, wd 2tb green, blank

The greens dont get above 38C, reds 43C, black 46C.  That includes preclear and parity checks.  All the drives usually are between 32C-41C depending on usage.

Anything above 44C makes me nervous. In your situation seeing > 60C, I'd stop using the computer until you can figure out a better cooling solution.

I have had a drive get to ~44C when I was preclearing and a parity check kicked off and the room was very warm.  It was one of my 4T Hitachi sandwiched between two the 1.5Tb Seagates.  What drive models are you seeing this on.  Some drives run hotter than others.  I suspect you have either a high ambient temperature or you have airflow issues.

You need examine you case and seal any open holes to force the air to go through the drive cages.  My case had a vent hole on the side panel.  I taped it off. The expansion slots had fillers with holes which I replaced with solid plates.

Just noticed you stated ambient was 20C.  I would defiantly say you have airflow issues.  Also check that any additional drive bays that are not populated and have a opening are blocked.
