Easy FTP?

Featured Replies

I love my unRaid Pro, and would love it more if I could access my files through the internet.

I know nothing of Linux though, is there an easy way to get my unRaid linux box online so I can access the files?

Thank you!

no there is no easy way to allow only you to access the files from anywhere on the internet securely.

It can be done but it is not easy or recommended.

Short answer: No. not if you value your files or your PC.

Longer answer: No, not if you value your files or anything on your PC or your LAN.

If you wish to access your media remotely, you might try "orb"  ( http://www.orb.com/ )

I've not tried it, or installed it, but it is supposed to basically do what I think you might be wanting.  It does require a fairly powerful PC, but it can stream your media to browsers on other PCs outside of your LAN, and... it is free. (you will be subjected to its ads I'm sure)

So what are people using to access their unraid files remotely?

I don't need streaming files, just FTP would be fine.

There's a way to do it with FTP, however, you have to realize there are many attacks that are automated.

So first and foremost a strong root password.

Second recommendation would be to add a user and password you would use for remote ftp just in case the password is compromised.

Thereafter you have to forward FTP on your router to the unRAID server.

Remember passwords are clear text and visible to snoopers wherever the network traverses. So be wise in account and password choice.

Ideally I would like FTP on the same box as unRaid, how do I get started?

My second choice would be to run it on a Windows 2000 box that I use as a torrent downloader.  That option would just required install of IIS, FTP service setup, and port forwarding on my router which I am comfortable with.

But I would prefer FTP on the unRaid box, have people accomplished this?  What software?  Some of the software I have read about is Samba, Apache, etc?

FTP is already available on the server with vsftp.

FWIW, If you forward FTP via the internet and do not set a root password, your machine will be hacked very soon after.

There are also other conversations on the board about ftp and forwarding ftp please consider doing a search.
