May 22, 201313 yr as for the power supply, I have a Seasonic S12II 430W. I am currently running 10 WD green discs with an atom board + controller card. This might sound like small power supply but according to the power supply thread it should have no problem powering this hardware and I chose it so that it would still be efficient when idling. If there is a power problem then I would suspect the sata power splitters........ I really have no idea how to proceed I think the power supply thread is misleading you. 10 disks @ 2 amps each = 20 Amps Add in about 5 more amps between the MB, fans, CPU power and you are likely somewhere near 25 Amps and possibly more. (25 Amps * 12 Volts = 300 Watts on the 12 volt rail) Your supply seems to have two 17 AMP rails. One review said they are internally connected, but ALSO said the power supply went into overcurrent protection when loaded over 18 Amps. The MAX wattage available on the two rails is stated at 360 watts. I'm thinking you are just too close to the limits. (or the parity disk is less tolerant of voltage spikes on the supply voltages, or perhaps is at the end of a series of power splitters, getting less voltage.) In any case I think you are pushing that supply over its ratings. Even if you think it is enough, the symptoms you are experiencing seem to indicate otherwise.
May 22, 201313 yr Agree with Joe's analysis. Be sure you get a PSU with a SINGLE 12v rail. The units I suggested will all work fine.
May 22, 201313 yr Author thanks heaps for all the feedback guys. At the time I purchased my current power supply it was published as being a single rail 30amp 12v. Now when I search the web there does seem to be some confusion as to whether it is single rail or dual rail. either way it does look like I have been pushing it's limits and the problems possible began when I added the last drive...... I have just placed an order for a Corsair TX-650M Modular Power Supply http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_354&products_id=18539 fingers crossed it will be here for the weekend. any speculation on what the outcome will be for poor old disc 6?
May 22, 201313 yr any speculation on what the outcome will be for poor old disc 6? Don't really like to speculate ... but since you asked: The issues in SMART could easily be due to power -- raw read errors; head retracts; etc. There are zero reallocated sectors; and zero pending reallocation; so there's a very good chance the drive is just fine
May 24, 201313 yr Author Still waking up at 5am when I made the purchase, accidentally bought the non-modular model instead, sames specs otherwise. Installed this afternoon and appears to be running stable. currently 45% into a rebuild of disc 6 with no signs of trouble. fingers crossed that the data on disc 1 and 6 will be sound after all the issues I had earlier...
May 24, 201313 yr accidentally bought the non-modular model instead, sames specs otherwise. Clearly that makes no difference as long as you have room in the case for the extra (unused) cables Modular is nice (I definitely prefer it) ... but the reality is modular supplies are statistically a bit LESS reliable than their non-modular equivalents -- for the age-old reason that every connection introduces a tiny bit of electrical loss and is another potential failure point.
May 24, 201313 yr Author the rebuild finished successfully. The random files I have accessed on drive 1 and 6 appear to be intact. Currently 30% into a parity check with no errors. Thank you very much for your assistance Gary & Joe. last thing I will try is to preclear the original disc 1 that failed with sectors pending relocation, just in case these were caused by the power issues and decided to go away... failing that I will ship it of monday for warranty.

The "sectors pending relocation" will go away -- they'll become reallocated sectors But if there are only a few, and if no more crop up during a couple cycles of pre-clear, the drive should be fine.
