Virtualizing unRAID with Xen on Arch Linux, XBMC & Windows with VGA Passthrough

thats good to know.  Any thoughts on why vnc with xen doesnt seem to work?  I think it is my last real hurdle in liking Xen and Arch...

For whatever reason vnc is not running or my windows vm is broken and never gets to the point of starting it, even thought it appears under xl list, so I assume it is running

does VNC work at all? it will be a black screen if gpu passed through and video displaying on host most likely. but you should still see boot process via vnc... make sure to change encoding to raw and use tightvnc on windows or chicken vnc on mac.

wait, what?  And abandon this whole project we started?  Such a recommendation opens me to a bunch of new questions, like what is the difference between Xen and KVM?  Is one better than the other?  Why use one over the other?  Why abandon Xen because of  a VNC issue as opposed to just trying again now that I have slightly more knowledge of the things involved.  What do I gain or lose by doing KVM instead of Xen?

Is the package I installed the right one?  Should I select more than that?  Could my VNC issue be caused by the hardware I have things running on?  Could it be a result of installing tigerVNC and then removing it?

I guess if the guys on the Arch forum would talk to me about my VNC/Xen issue it would help, but everyone is mum.

If you have the version from Yaourt make sure you applied with ATI Passthrough patch while building it. It's critical to get it working, simply edit the build process when it ask you to, and uncomment one line. You can just install it again to make sure, I installed it like 3 times. Also it was failing for me to compile while on Xen Kernel, due to low memory issues. I reboot on normal Arch (selecting from Grub) and compiled without any issues.

Same problem here, VNC doesn't work if GPU is passthrough. I just disabled GPU for installation, and after that installed logmein which replaces VNC without any issues.

I'm using HDMI instead of DVI on my HD 6450. It takes exactly 105 seconds to get the display on on each boot, be patient. Also had to do some regedit hacks to solve some issues with overscan on my display, and had to use ironic logon and logoff scripts to get proper performance on the graphics after each reboot, else only proper performance first time you start the VM.

If you need can provide more details. Right now Windows 8.1 is working at 100%, uptime of almost 2 weeks. My main concern is that is constantly takes around 6-8% of the DomU while idling, guess some interrupts or similar, and sleep of the Windows 8.1 doesn't work (expected, Xen is for professional use cases). Benchmarks of the machine is exactly what I would expect from Bare metal installation.

Ok was reinstalling and got this

xen-4.3.1/buildconfigs/select-repository: Write failed

xen-4.3.1/buildconfigs/Rules.mk: Write failed

xen-4.3.1/buildconfigs/ketchup: Write failed

Interesting thing to note is I just compiled, yesterday, for a build I'm doing for my Dad without the ATI patch and all went smoothly. I used the default settings and didn't have to modify PKGBUILD.

Any idea why I can't extract? Missing something else or just try again?

Make sure you are using this version https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xen/ and you are Arch is up to date.

Make sure in /etc/pacman.conf that you have multilib repo uncommented and update pacman:

pacman -Syyu

Make sure you have the base-devel package installed:

pacman -S base-devel

Then try and install the Xen package via yaourt.

yaourt -S xen

Seems to be a known issue, found this in the Arch package comments:

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xen/?setlang=it&comments=all

@meltfund: That looks like one of the dependancies might not have downloaded correctly (during compile, the Makefiles pull down a number of additional sources, patch and compile against them) - I'm currently modifying the PKGBUILD to download those before compile, confirm they downloaded correctly, then copy them into place so the build scripts can make use of them) - should have a new version uploaded later today (after I've finished a couple of build tests - both on bare metal and under a virtual environment)

I compiled it again this afternoon and it was perfect.

I'm a bit busy tonight so sorry for the short answer.

But check my blog... I mention specifically how to set tmpfs to 4gb.

Trying to make your life easier, the fstab entry bellow:

I really appreciate you jumping in and helping out.

Glad we have another Arch Linux Pro in here.

yeah, found it, thanks.  I think I commented it out while working to get things working with grumpy...size if 4G now but it still fails, now with more crap...

Something is hosed up for sure.

I know this works and has VNC built in.

Upload to your Arch Server and run the following command to install:

pacman -U xen-4.3.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

xen-4.3.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz <--- Download Link

well, this is telling

testARCH /home # pacman -U xen-4.3.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
loading packages...
warning: downgrading package xen (4.3.1-2 => 4.3.1-1)
resolving dependencies...
warning: cannot resolve "bluez4", a dependency of "xen"
:: The following package cannot be upgraded due to unresolvable dependencies:
      xen

:: Do you want to skip the above package for this upgrade? [y/N]

I ran the command as root because when I ran as the less privileged user for yaourt, I got this:

bige@testARCH /home $ pacman -U xen-4.3.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
error: you cannot perform this operation unless you are root.
bige@testARCH /home  $

well, this is telling

testARCH /home # pacman -U xen-4.3.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
loading packages...
warning: downgrading package xen (4.3.1-2 => 4.3.1-1)

Install bluez4:

sudo pacman -S bluez4

If it complains about bluez4 conflicts with bluez. Go ahead and let it uninstall bluez and install bluez4.

I'm intrigued by this from you blog Alex...

unRAID.cfg

on_xend_stop  = 'shutdown'
on_xend_start = 'start'
name = 'unRAID'
vcpus = '1'
memory = '1024'
vif = [ 'mac=00:16:3e:a1:b2:cc,bridge=xenbr0' ]
kernel = "/home/alex/unraid/bzimage"
ramdisk = "/home/alex/unraid/bzroot"
extra = "console=hvc0"
acpi = 1
apic = 1
pci = [ '00:1d.0','02:00.0','00:1f.2' ]

If I am reading that correctly, you are basically loading bzimage/bzroot from the local HD...kinda like PXE but local.  Correct?  Do you have the USB plugged in and passed through just for the license and config?

Yes and Yes.

KVM / Xen does not need a bootloader and can boot straight into a Linux Kernel in a VM without it.

The VHD for KVM / Xen... I am letting it use the bootloader so people have the option to run unRAID in SAFE mode.
