devastator
Hey guys, I'm planning to build a new fileserver/mythtv backend using unraid. I'll be running mythv (MythBuntu) in a VMware session. I was thinking about the following setup: * CPU: AMD Athlon X2 5050e 2.6GHz 1MB 45W AM2 Box * MoBo: Asus M3N78 GeForce 8200, SATA2 RAID, GLAN * PSU: Be Quiet Powersupply Straight Power 600W * Case: Cooler Master Midi Tower Centurion 590 ATX No PSU * Mem: OCZ 2x2GB DDR2 SDRAM PC8500 CL5.0 Gold Edition * DISK: 2x Western Digital 640GB SATA300 16MB, WD6400AACS and 2x PATA disks from my old machine Any thoughts/ comments ? NAS
My initial though would be seriously consider using an official motherboard. It may cost some more money but the hidden benefits of having Limetech test your kit for you and release fixes before you know its broken is worth the cash Quote Link to comment
devastator
Any recommendation you can make here about the mobo ? GA-MA74GM-S2H ? Which passive cooling can i fit on the CPU ? Quote Link to comment
lionelhutz
A number of people are successfully using 740G chipset based boards with Unraid. Your VMware requirement adds an unknown to the mix though. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2642.0 Peter Quote Link to comment
lionelhutz
Just found these posts; http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2826.15 Apparently, the SB700 on these boards is causing some issues, how bad or what SB700 southbridges are affected is not yet known (see the note of SB700 old revision meaning a new card might not have the issue) since it appears one poster still has a working system. 4.3 is working fine and I imagine Tom will address this in the future but it's still something to consider. devastator
thanks ! Seems to be difficult to find a decent mobo for an AMD Athlon 64 x2 build ... Quote Link to comment
lionelhutz
I wouldn't rule it out yet - they're cheap and do work with 4.3. I have an ECS version (I think it was ECS). If I have time in the next few days I'll try the new release and see what happens on my board. Peter Quote Link to comment
rhubarb9999
I am using this board (as are others) and it is working great. GIGABYTE GA-MA74GM-S2 and AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane 2.6GHz Check the "Motherboards" forum for more info Quote Link to comment
lionelhutz
Yes, read the latest on that thread I linked before and Tom comments that it just appears to be an information error appearing so using that board should not cause any issues. Peter Quote Link to comment
semicycle
Just adding another vote for the gigabyte board for the board...I'm using it with a cool running AMD Athlon X2 4850e 2.5GHz CPU. Not a single issue to report Quote Link to comment
devastator
Thanks for your comments guys ! Will order this board today, and will post the results later on ! Gr, Deva Quote Link to comment
