Very, very strange problem with PRO/1000GT nic

Featured Replies

allright have a system running on 5-rc12a

Biostar A55MH Motherboard, AMD A4-3300

Onboard NIC Realtek RTL8111E

Startech PEXSATA24E SATA card in the (only) PCI-E 16 slot

system works perfectly. no errors no glitches, nada

However with what I'm reading that 5.0 final has.. issues.. with Realtek NIC's.. decided to drop in a PRO/1000GT PCI card (only 1 PCI slot).

so...

this is still on RC12a

stop array, reboot

get to bios setup, disable the onboard nic

save, power down

install new card

power up

UNRaid starts, can access the web gui, no issues

however..

all 4 drives on the EXSATA24E are GONE. Poof, non-existant. Array doesn't start because of missing drives.

I can see the card bios start messages, drives APPEAR to be detected.

ok, restart, go to bios, re-enable the onboard nic.

power down, pull card

start up, system starts, array starts, no errors, perfect.

lather, rinse, repeat. same thing, put in INTEL, drives go away, pull INTEL drives come back?

Stinky motherboard? Stinky INTEL Card?

Can you put the Intel card in a different slot?

Can you put the Intel card in a different slot?

I was going to recommend the same but it sounds like he doesn't have other slots to work with.

A similar thing happened when I added a Intel Pro/1000 PT Quad to my machine. Luckily, it's a PCI-e card so I was able to simply swap slots with my drive controller to get it working. That doesn't seem to be an option for him though.

no it's a small board...

1 x PCI-E x16 2.0 Slot

2 x PCI-E x1 2.0 Slot

1 x PCI Slots

the SATA card is in the x16 slot (it's an x4)

sounds like I'm screwed until I get a new board :(

You might try disabling some on board devices like serial ports, parallel ports, advanced video modes and anything else that might need a resource the Intel Nic wants but has to share with your Sata card.  You could also see if the bios shows any setting for the Intel Nic that you could change to alternates.  Also try the card in another box and see if there are problems then.  If you try the card in multiple different MB systems and the problem repeats it is probably the card.  If it works in other systems it could be an incompatiblity with your Sata card or MB.

I'm pretty sure disabled everything on it I wasn't using (serial, parallel, etc) but I'll check when I get home. The INTEL card itself APPEARS (operative word) to be working, ie. I can get to the WebGui and see the drives missing. It may just be a m'board limitation but I'll check those points when I get home.

You likely have conflicting interrupts for PCI and PCIe slots.    See if your BIOS allows modifying these.

No settings I can find, this Biostar board is very bare-bones in the bios.

Weird.. I haven't see  IRQ issues since the days of ISA ports. That's an IRQ problem for sure. I can't remember if that card allows you to force it to claim a particular IRQ or not. Some of the pro cards allow you to force an IRQ for network booting. When you start up the machine you may get a brief opportunity to get in to the nic's firmware settings (after the mobo bios, but before UNRAID starts).

Go in there (it's a press a key for set-up deal) and see if there's a place for IRQ settings... Set it to automatic and it should be OK. I had an old NIC that had this problem, so I hope this helps!

Well, I'm at a loss. I found the note on how to install lspci for UNRAID, did so..

again this is 5.0-rc12a, not moving up to 5.0 final till I can sort the Realtek issue (and a couple other things)

THIS is the output without the INTEL card in, onboard Realtek NIC enabled.

See anything amiss? Like the Marvell Card missing?

NOTE: THE MARVELL CARD IS DETECTED DURING STARTUP AND DOES ENUMERATE THE DRIVES.

Marvell card using IRQ18

Realtek IRQ44

INTEL Card using IRQ20

ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER CHANGES OTHER THAN DISABLING THE REALTEK AND INSERTING THE INTEL CARD.

There are no bios options to twiddle with the IRQs

I can find no magic key to get into either the Marvell card or the INTEL card.

Is the JMicron Sata your onboard controller?  If it is a second controller and your board also has an AMD based chipset controller you could see if you can disable it (JMicron) and have the Marvel based addon card show up.  I've seen problems with multiple manufactures causing problems like this.  For instance I had a built it SataI Sil3114 and I couldn't plug in a Sil3114/3112 card unless I disable the built in Sil3114.

No the JMicron is a simple 2 port SATA that is holding a non-array drive SNAP'ed that I'm using for LMS support (tried to put it on a arrary drive and had problems, the drive never stopped spinning)

Biostar has 6 array drives

Marvell has 4

JMicron has 1 non-array drive

See if you can disable/remove it and if it makes a difference.  If the Marvel shows up with drives in unRAID then you have an incompatibility between the JMicron and the Marvell.  If it still doesn't work then I don't know what to tell you further.

give it a try tonight, thanks..

and I think you mean between the JMicron and the Intel...

the Marvell disappears when the Intel gets plugged in, the JMicron is always there :)

Yes and No.  I probably should have said between all three devices.  If the disable of the JMicron works than it just may be that there are resources for two of the devices but not three - assuming they don't want to or are unable to SHARE resources.

It just occured to me that the Intel may not want to share resources but the JMicron and Marvel would so you might try to swap cards around to different slots and see if any configuration with all three cards work (assuming they are all on cards).  On some older MBs I've had to play musical chairs with the cards to find a slot configuration that worked.  I had one PCI HDD controller that would only work in a SINGLE PCI slot because of the way it was wired.  If you got into the bios and switched the IRQ settings around to get it to work in another slot the built in Video would no longer function.  So once I found the slot it worked in I was able to then arrange the rest of the cards and change interrupts on parallel and serial ports and got it working.  I'm hoping your problem might be similar and you can find a work around like I did (number of years ago now).

Just finished trying moving/removing the JMicron card...

Moved to the other PCI-e x1 slot, same result

Removed totally, same result

Either the mboard dosen't like having both the INTEL and Marvell or the Marvell don't like the INTEL (or vice versa)

anyone recommend a PCI-E 4 or 8 Port card I can replace the Marvell?

As a matter of interest, have you TRIED v5.0 with the Realtek NIC?  I've got two UnRAID servers -- one with an Intel NIC, one with a Realtek; and both work perfectly with v5.0

The simplest fix may be to simply use the onboard NIC  :)

STOP MAKING SENSE! :)

actually, no I haven't but I saw many comments about it causing 'issues'... this is a RTL8111E so I was trying to get ahead of things....

but I wanted to get past this before the next thing... I'm unsure how to approach the 5.0 upgrade since I'm using SNAP to mount a non-array drive and the LMS plugin (which I not sure if it's set for 5.0 yet..)

however... I'm looking at another m'board... 2x PCI, 2x PCI-E x4/16 and 2x PCI-e x1... and 8 SATA ports :)

more to come.

Just take any spare flash drive;  format it and put the stock v5.0 UnRAID distribution on it;  then boot to it on your server.  Don't, of course, assign any drives to it -- just see if you can transfer something to/from the flash drive okay.    If so, the NIC is working  :)

Then you can focus on the other things you need to resolve before a v5.0 upgrade.

That's too bad looks like it just isn't going to work with the Marvel and Intel.  But as garycase said you may as well see if you are going to have problems with the Realtek nic first before moving to something else.  I don't have any servers with a Realtek but I have one on my preclear station so you might be fine also.
