First Ever Preclear - Current Pending Sector Issue

Featured Replies

Hello,

My parity drive recently showed a Current Pending Sector count of 8. They wouldn't remap under unRAID, so I replaced the drive (see details in another thread).

I've carried out my first ever preclear. I've run it twice. The first run remapped 7 of the sectors, but left 1 count (RAW). I ran preclear again and there is still 1 Current Pending Sector count. It states the drive has passed.

Is this something I should be worried about - especially as I want to use this drive for a data drive. The SMART wiki says that sometimes a subsequent good read of that sector can make it not remap (a limitation of the process).

I've included the logs of the preclear process

Thx

You better run the extended test with a vendor specific diagnostic tool.

Thx for the pointers. I'm running the long test now via unmenu and the "Disk Management tab.

Does that page automatically return the results when it is finished?? I tried the refresh and it seems to start the test again. Thx

The long test completed without error. It says it's passed.

The drive still has a Current Pending Sector Count of 1.

Also it had a Multi_Zone_Error_Rate of 1, but now that I've started to write to the drive that RAW value is suddenly 153.

Not sure I should trust this drive.

Can I just unassign it from the array?? I need the port to preclear my next drive?

Would it be a suitable drive to use as a data drive (used via a USB dock). It won't be running all the time.

Thx.

I'd RMA the drive, I had a WD 2.0TB drive do something similar recently: shortly after developing an unusual MZER count I took it out of service to test it.  During the second preclear pass it started to develop lots (like 1000...) of bad sectors, so then I RMA'ed it.

Regards,

Stephen

Thx for the comments. The drive is out of warranty, so can't be RMA'd.

Putting a new one in saves me having to worry about it as much. I'll switch out drives and carry out a rebuild.

Can the old drive be used for anything else?? - other than a boat anchor :)

Sure! Use it for a workstation with no local data storage, just easily reloadable programs. Or a game machine, or anything else that doesn't require backup. A windows install probably won't even care if the drive has bad spots, I've seen windows run acceptably on drives that are pretty much trash.
