After upgrade, root password valid in browser, not in explorer

Featured Replies

So I have a mystery, not so much as a problem.

After upgrading to 5 from 4.7, my root password (or username) seems to have a hickup.

My root user still works in my browser. I can browse to main site and to unMenu page.

In the Explorer however it does not work with root to see my shares. Only my other username still functions.

Is this a new feature perhaps?

Also, I can no longer map the shares in my W8 laptop. It says "Handle invalid"

The root user is no longer allowed to access shares.  This is a security improvement that was added to samba.

It seems a bit deeper.

When I type \\tower in the explorer, I can see all the shares but not access them as the other user.

Therefore I can´t map the shares as before. Could that be something in my windowsbox still lingering?

I did check "Remember setting" when I first contacted tower (as root) before upgrade.

And I did check the box when I first contacted tower as the other user.

The other user was "Administrator" and showed under users before.

Now the only other user I have is "admin", so Administrator mysteriously vanished?

I cannot add new users either, any new user can be typed in but doesn´t show under users afterwards.

So I can´t test.

Users must not have upper case. Also, clear the network credentials on the windows machine.

Thanks, I didn´t know about uppercase, this also worked Before.

Now I can add a new user.

But still, after clearing my credentials, I can see all the shares as the new user, but still not access them.

First I get "Handle not valid" when trying to map, and the when i click on on a share that I can see I get "\\tower\01_Movies is not available. Your rights may be insufficient......"

Sorry for the delay, had to be somewhere else for a while.

-No, i didn´t run the script, didn´t know there was one.

I followed the upgrade instructions on "Migrating from unRAID 4.7 to unRAID 5.0" and i also saw the postings on

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=30039.0 , script not mentioned.

Can someone please explain to me why this should be necessary? And what the thinkings were when it was decided not to allow root to browse shares ??? (Seems to me a bit like W7-W8 where the local Administrator is still not the Administrator sometimes, very confusing)

Will the script do something to make the shares unavailable if i decide to revert to 4.7?

You should also have read the following post from Tom in the first post under this thread:

    http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=29096.0

In Section 5 under the upgrade instructions on moving from to 4.7 to 5.0 is the following:

- Go to Utils/New Permissions and execute that utility to change file ownership and permission settings.  This is
a one-time action necessary for proper operation of the 5.0 security model.

The basic reason for the change to eliminate the root user from having access is for security reasons.  Apparently, it is quite easy to for a knowledgeable hacker to get from a 'share' to the other places in the file system.  Once there, the hacker has permission to anything and everything.

Thank You, I missed that one...

Have now run the script, didn´t take as long as I feared. I can now see my shared files again.

Now on to installing PLEX, which for me is the goal of this whole upgrade excersize...

I just did the upgrade from 4.7 to 5.0 and ran the security script you mentioned above from Tom's post.  I don't have any users defined so when I tried to access my share after the update I kept getting an error that the share was no longer valid.  I was able to resolve this by adding root as my username on the share (with password left blank).  Just wanted to confirm this was "normal" and whether or not I should create a new user with a password?

EDIT:  The share that I accessed was from my NMT PCH-A400.  I can still access the share that was there before I upgraded to v5.0 Final but if I try to browse the WORKGROUP and access my TOWER then it asks for a username and password.  In this case, "root" with a blank password doesn't work so I'm assuming that I will eventually have to create a new "admin" user (since I have no use for other users in my setup)?  If someone could confirm this is normal that would be great.

What security have you set?  If all the shares are public then you should not need to define any users.

No security as far as I know.  I made some hardware changes to my network (added an 8 port unmanaged switch) so I haven't checked it since then.  I'll try again tomorrow and report back.  Thanks.
