December 28, 201312 yr Author I have just completed preclear on a new hdd. I have added the 3 reports for the disk. Can some one assist me by telling me if the disk of good to use or not? What should I be looking out for in the preclear reports? Cheers preclear_start_WD-WMC4N0974787_2013-12-28.txt preclear_rpt_WD-WMC4N0974787_2013-12-28.txt preclear_finish_WD-WMC4N0974787_2013-12-28.txt
December 28, 201312 yr Everything looks fine. No reallocated sectors; no pending reallocations; and no SMART values outside of the nominal ranges.
December 29, 201312 yr Author I want to use the new disk but I am having problems with getting the share folder on the new disk. I have attached my shares settings. I have accidentally added my second disk to the shares but the third is not so lucky!
December 29, 201312 yr The disks are disk1, disk2, disk3, etc. => not disk 1, disk 2, etc. (i.e. no space between "disk" and the number. In addition, you should separate them with commas. e.g. to include disks 1-4, you'd use disk1,disk2,disk3,disk4
December 29, 201312 yr Author I have tried this. Videos shared folder on disk 3 still does not show up.
December 29, 201312 yr I have tried this. Videos shared folder on disk 3 still does not show up. What do you mean by "does not show up" ?? Are you expecting a "Videos" folder to be created on Disk3 just because you added it to the share? That's NOT the way it works. Adding Disk3 to the share means disk3 will now be used for that share WHEN it is needed. It does NOT create that folder until it's actually going to write to that disk. If you change your share's allocation method to "Most free", then (assuming this is a new disk and has more space available than any other disk in the share) the next write to that share will be to Disk3 ... and this will cause the folder to be created.
January 11, 201412 yr Author Hi, I have precleared another disk. Sorry to ask again, but is it good for use? Thanks preclear_start_WD-WMC4N1428012_2014-01-07.txt preclear_rpt_WD-WMC4N1428012_2014-01-07.txt preclear_finish_WD-WMC4N1428012_2014-01-07.txt
January 25, 201412 yr Author I have just pre-cleared another HDD. Is this HDD good to use? I have attached the reports. I have another question, my transfer speeds from my PC to the tower hits a maximum speed of 9MB/s. I have changed my equipment so that it is all gigabit. I am currently not using a parity drive either. I have read users hit speeds of 45MB/s. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks preclear_start_WD-WCC4E0722605_2014-01-25.txt preclear_rpt_WD-WCC4E0722605_2014-01-25.txt preclear_finish_WD-WCC4E0722605_2014-01-25.txt
January 25, 201412 yr The results look fine. However, your transfer speed clearly is not up-to-par. Are you CERTAIN that your equipment is "... all gigabit". All of the network interfaces on the systems; your router; and any switches involved? If so, then I suspect you have a cable with a discontinuous pair (i.e. a wire that's broken or not connected to the connector pin, or a loose connector pin that's not making contact when plugged in).
January 25, 201412 yr Author Everything is definitely gigabit. I will disconnect everything and just try a pc to gigabit router to tower. I use cat6 cables too! I will possibly buy new ones and then try. Gary, once again thank you sir.
January 25, 201412 yr There is one other possibility, although I'd think that's relatively unlikely, as you almost certainly would have noticed it !! Look at your Web GUI and be sure none of your drives have been "red-balled" (i.e. disabled). If a drive is disabled, you can still access it (!) ... that's the whole idea of fault tolerance. However, when you write to that drive, the writes are actually just to the parity drive, but each write requires reading ALL of the other drives so the correct parity bit can be computed. In other words, they're much slower than normal. I think it's VERY unlikely that's what's happening here (surely you'd have noticed that on the Web GUI display) ... but a quick glance at the Web GUI will tell you if that's the case. [Note this also means that all disks have to spin up to access the "missing/failed" disk] If by chance this is the issue, then of course the next thing you want to do is replace the bad disk !!
January 28, 201412 yr Author I found by replacing the cables I have been getting transfer speeds of 36.5MB/s So far I have transferred just over 10GB at a transfer speed of 9MB/s, oh my will this be a good change!
January 28, 201412 yr Glad it's resolved. I'm not at all surprised -- all it takes is one little cable with a break or a poor connection on one of the connectors, and you'll get MUCH slower transfers (as you've already seen).
