January 18, 201412 yr Hey guys, so my internet went down and i said screw it ill watch a movie on the server i have, the network cable or is connected to the wireless router and then the wireless router is wired to my computer....but when the internet went down i noticed it wouldn't let me transfer ? The server is 6 feet from the wireless router.
January 18, 201412 yr You've clearly got something set wrong. There's no need for an internet connection to send files around your internal network A few more details might help isolate what's happening.
January 18, 201412 yr I am guessing that your internet router is also your internal switch.. Maybe its rebooting to get back the connection to the internet and with that also killing your switchconnection.. If you set up a gigabyte switch before your router and connect your devices over that switch and have only one cable from switch to router you would solve that.. Even better would be to setup your internet router as a modem only (passthru/bridge mode) and then have a router of your own behind it switching for you as well as providing your network with wifi.. That way everything would continue to work when your internet goes down..

That way everything would continue to work when your internet goes down.. This is very difficult (impossible for mere mortals) with Verizon FIOS. The FIOS 'router' won't bridge. Otherwise its a great idea! Following up on Helmonder's idea, try disconnecting the incoming internet connection from the router...that might allow the router to stabilize and act as your LAN switch. Nevermind. Jumperalex trumps my whining by using facts below.

I'm not sure what FiOS router you have, but I've had two and both will 100% bridge. I'm doing it right now. There are caveats / special steps needed, if you are also doing TV over FiOS (I do not) but it is indeed possible and below is a very useful guide for doing it with all the different options depending on your needs. I personally am using option 4. http://www.dslreports.com/faq/16077
