There have been occasions when firmware updates were needed to prevent data loss. But, IMHO, rarely are drive firmware updates needed. Link to comment

Typically, firmware updates are available as a CD iso which can be booted. A USB CD drive may be required. Alternatively, a DOS boot flash drive can be prepared. Link to comment
