February 15, 201412 yr Ok, I bought a HP Microserver and can not get unraid to boot. I currently have 2 HD in the server and USB setup. Im using a bluetooth keyboard as I dont have a uSB one, just one with the old connection which the server aint got. Ive tried messing with the BIOS but nothing. I can see that it USB is set as main boot and tried setting it to FDD and Hard drive but still nothing. I thought this was supposed to be simple.
February 15, 201412 yr Author I'm using a 8gb Verbatim. I have right clicked on the make_bootable.bat file and ran as admin. Cmd window pops up then asks to press any key to continue which I do. It then closes. I'm not convinced that it worked. Put usb in server and nothing.
February 15, 201412 yr What usb are you using? Have you ran the make_bootable.bat? Thin the Captain possibly means which usb port are you using? Are you using an onboard (motherboard) port or one of the external ports? Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk
February 15, 201412 yr Do you have another computer, even a laptop, that you can test boot with the flash? You may need to repeat the install instructions. Read them completely and follow then carefully.
February 16, 201412 yr Author Am going to try my laptop. When copying over the Zip file do I unzip it then copy the unzipped file over.
February 16, 201412 yr Author Thought that but wanted to check. Tried usd in Laptop and straight into unraid so usd is good. But when I put it in the microserver does not work. Must be a bios setting wrong.

It then closes. I'm not convinced that it worked. Put usb in server and nothing. You have to run make_bootable from the flash drive -- is that what you did? Just to be clear, the process is: (a) Unzip the downloaded file; (b) copy the entire contents of the zip file to a FAT32 formatted flash drive; © run make_bootable on the flash drive with admin privileges.
February 16, 201412 yr Have tried both. Front and rear I know (cos i've just got one) that the 'usual' place to boot this server fromm is via the internal usb port on the motherboard itself. Have you tried that? I've read reports that people have had problems booting from external ports (why?) It's at the front, left hand side as you're looking inside the server case, you can't miss it! Try it there (assuming it will fit, if not use an extender cable and secure your flash inside the case) and it may do the trick.
February 16, 201412 yr Author Oh didn't know internal usb. Will give it a go after Top Gear. Thanks for the tip. Will report back.
February 16, 201412 yr BIOS should have USB FIRST in the boot order, or boot sequence...if you see multiple USB types in the BIOS for this, the one you want is USB HDD, (not USB CD ROM, etc.). If you don't see 'USB' in the BIOS, it could be called, "removable device", or 'external device'.
February 16, 201412 yr Author Right boot seq is usb mode to hard disk. And usb is internal on MB. And nothing. This is getting annoying. When I plugged the USB into Laptop it when straight into unraid.
February 16, 201412 yr Clearly the issue is the boot order. Does the MicroServer have a "boot menu"hotkey (e.g. F12, Esc, F10, etc.) ? If so, press that at the POST screen so you get the boot menu; then select the flash drive ... and confirm that UnRAID is indeed booting okay. Once you've confirmed that, you simply need to isolate what settings need to be changed in the BIOS. An 8GB flash drive may be enumerating as a hard drive -- if so, you'll need to make the hard drive first in the boot order; and then set the flash drive first in the hard drive order. But first, confirm it boots okay. Then look more carefully in your BIOS options.
February 17, 201412 yr I've got a SAN Cruzer Fit, 8GB running from the internal usb no problem. My 54L was already configured to boot from usb first in the sequence. I'm sure i read that all HP microservers are configured that way out of the box. Booted first time. Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk
February 17, 201412 yr Author Was thinking about this last night and realized that I never seen the cmd promt telling me no OS available. I am using a VGA to HDMI convertor which is working during the initial boot but gets no signal after this. Im going to go up into my attic as i think Ive a old CRT monitor up there. Will report back this evening. Many thanks for all the help.
February 17, 201412 yr BIOS Setup TipsThe system BIOS can be complicated and t Try in sequence: o Forced-FDD o USB-HDD o USB-ZIP Try disabling USB 2.0 support (this will default to USB 1.1). Try switching on or off any “Fast Boot” feature. Try Switching on or off “USB keyboard” support.
February 17, 201412 yr Author I do think its the VGA to HDMI is causing the issue. At this point I have tried everything in the BIOS and nothing. I get the HP splash Screen then the F10 or F12 for BIOS. Then a screen showing current settings then the screen goes blank. Hopefully the monitor I have had in the attic for the last 5 years works.
February 18, 201412 yr Author Right went hunting for old monitor in attic with no luck. I decided to connect the server to my network and see if I could see it. And there it was with unraid waiting for me. Too late to start playing tonight but tomorrow will get putty going and preclear my drives and install unmentionable. Many thanks for all the help.
February 19, 201412 yr I decided to connect the server to my network and see if I could see it. You had never done this ?! ... sounds like it's been working all along.
February 19, 201412 yr I decided to connect the server to my network and see if I could see it. You had never done this ?! ... sounds like it's been working all along. Yup ... same here. Initial build instructions point you in thr direction of establishing that network connections are available. Seems to be implicit that it will be operated over a web connection fairly early on in the build. I DID attach a screen to mine but only to make sure it had booted correctly to a login prompt. Once happy with that i've managed it across the network , no problems yet. Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk
