February 16, 201412 yr At the moment I have Unraid 5 running in ESXi. I also have a Win 7 VM. Unraid 6 offers virtualization too. Are there reasons to move to unraid 6. Does the virtualization in unraid 6 offer advantages over ESXi? Is unraid 6 64 bit only? Will al my plugins still work? I have Serviio, LMS, Sabnzbd and apcupsd installed.
February 16, 201412 yr You must use 64bit plugins. Some are available. Or move that functionality to VM

I have Serviio, LMS, Sabnzbd and apcupsd installed. I don't like the way ESXi is heading - making it less open. So I may get rid of my ESXi servers once unRAID 6 is not in beta any more. I will be setting up a test (sort of production too) unRAID 6 server and a couple of Windows VMs that are currently running on my N54L in VirtualBox.

"Are there reasons to move to unraid 6?" ==> This is kind of like asking "Should I buy a new car" ... when your old one is still running just fine. Yes, the new ones have features your old one may not [i LOVE the guidelines and distance markers in my wife's backup camera ... but I'm not going to replace my car to get them -- at least not for another year or so ] ... but if the old one's working well, there's no compelling reason to upgrade. UnRAID v6 IS heading very nicely towards a very virtualization-friendly environment, with good support for free hypervisors. I agree with Bob's comments r.e. ESXi's movement towards a less-open product -- but it's still an excellent hypervisor; and I'd say that if your current system is working well and you don't have issues, there's no compelling reason to make any changes. On the other hand, picking up another key and building a test system to run v6 isn't a bad idea. This will let you move away from ESXi when you're reading to switch to the x64 v6 ... AFTER all the plugins you like to use have been migrated to x64 [and well tested by the community ]. I suspect we're not too far away from a release of v6 with full hypervisor support and management "built-in". THAT will be a pretty compelling reason to switch

I doubt the EX490 would allow pass through but it probably has virtualization settings and even it if didn't I was under the impression that Xen would still work just be limited even further to software only virtualization. So I would say try it. If it isn't being used for anything. That is why my test server will be on a X7SBE MB and a Q9550s. Old technology but it DOES work with pass through since I was doing that with ESXi 4.1 for a while.
