February 25, 201412 yr Will these be good for our unRAID builds? http://www.pcworld.com/article/2100347/wds-new-purple-hard-drives-optimized-for-24/wd-says-its-new-purple-hard-drives-are-optimized-for-24.html#tk.rss_all
February 25, 201412 yr They're optimized for 24/7 operation with a high percentage of writes vs. reads. While these optimizations certainly won't "hurt" anything -- i.e. the drives would work fine in an UnRAID array -- they're also not necessary for typical UnRAID applications. The purples would be good for video surveillance and PVR/DVR type applications -- not a typical use of UnRAID. I'd think the Red series is more appropriate for UnRAID ... they're also designed for 24/7 operation, but are optimized for NAS type storage.
February 25, 201412 yr yahoo, lets create another color for some other application we have not thought of yet. On one side I think it makes sense to do this... but then the Mac person in me take hold and say they should stop doing this stuff. Black, Green, Red, and Blue would have appear to be enough to me... but what do I know.
February 25, 201412 yr I suspect it's more marketing than anything else, to draw the surveillance market to them.
March 20, 201412 yr WD have had a similar drive out for years, the AV-GP. They were designed for PVR and CCTV stuff. I have a 320GB AV-GP that came out of a PVR (I upgraded it with a 7200rpm 1TB Hitachi a few years ago). The AV-GP is SLOW. It doesn't get much more than 30MB/s read or write. The firmware is definitely written for streaming video. If the Purple is as pathetic as the AV-GP, then I'd stick to the Red in an unRAID situation.
