March 4, 201412 yr Hello How should I do if I were to replace my motherboard and cpu, but keep my drives? I've seen a relatively cheap motherboard that comes with 6 SATA ports, and would work with an AMD Sempron 145 Sargas (45W) that is cheap as well Thanks
March 4, 201412 yr Your sig says unRAID 4.7 If your not on 5 it will be easier if you go ahead and upgrade because unRAID 5 remembers your disks by serial number. You can just plug them in to your new system and it should boot up just as if nothing had changed.
March 4, 201412 yr Author Cool, I didn't know I have to admit that I am a little "scared" to upgrade......We use the server every night to watch TV thru my WD TV Live, and if I have some issues, my wife will go crazy !!! (I should maybe backup her favorite TV shows on a portable hard drive....... )
March 4, 201412 yr unRAID 5 doesn't touch your data drives, so you shouldn't lose anything. Get a second flash drive and put unRAID 5.0.5 on it. (Keys are on sale right now. ) Then if something goes wrong, you can just shut down, plug the 4.7 flash back in and you're up and running. Or, a bit more cumbersome, just copy all your existing 4.7 flash to your PC/Mac as a backup. From those who've upgraded to 5, the most troublesome thing appears to be the new security model. unRAID 4.7 allowed 'root' to access all the content. In unRAID 5, 'root' can administer all shares and data, but a userid needs to be setup to access content. After setting up the userid, you'd have to then change your WD box to login with the new enduserid. Alternatively, you could just set each share to be 'Export=YES', and 'Security=PUBLIC'. Oh! and if you use 'SimpleFeatures', its no longer compatible...remove it. And try 'Dynamix' instead.

So assuming your hardware boots unRAID you can put your drives in any order and in any sata port and you're good to go?

My current server is pretty basic, I don't think I have installed any specific "modules"...
March 4, 201412 yr Sorry for my ignorance, but what is "SimpleFeatures"? My current server is pretty basic, I don't think I have installed any specific "modules"... Then its probably not an issue. SF was a popular replacement for the standard unRAID web interface. One thing I'd recommend even before you upgrade: take a screenshot of the home page of your unRAID web page...the page that shows which drive is in which slot. Why? Because while its true that the DATA drives can be in any order, you need to be sure to IDENTIFY the PARITY and the CACHE drive correctly. (you don't want to mess up and and claim a data drive is parity if its not...the data will get deleted as a new parity is written.) The screenshow will show you the drive serial numbers.
March 4, 201412 yr Since you're on unRAID 4.7 you will not have simplefeatures so no worry about that. It is good to have a screenshot in case anything goes wrong. But if you have upgraded to 5 before trying to change the hardware then as I said above it should just boot up as if nothing has changed and there will be no need to assign any drives. I am on my 3rd motherboard and CPU and I've never had a problem transferring my drives.
