I just noticed from the WebGUI a red dot on my hdd...Here is a syslog and short smart scan. Waiting on long smart. thanks

Can't review from my phone, but 95% of the time a red ball means that the cabling to the drive is not secure. Maybe data cable or power cable.

I would check that first.

So I got a new WD 1TB Red and precleared it 3 times. Then I stopped array & shut down. Removed bad hdd and replaced with new. turned back on started array. It stated it would rebuild and take a long time doing so. But i came back to check the status and it doesnt say any longer that its rebuilding but the disk still has red dot on it. Its a different sata cable then original. Same port and same sata power cable.. ill attach the log.

*cant attach the log it says "The upload folder is full. Please try a smaller file and/or contact an administrator."

I just had same problem but then one of the 3 graphics I was trying to attach was actually attached.  You might keep trying or post a link elsewhere since you can't attach now.

I you you can't attach it on the forum in a ZIP file then try another site dropbox if that is still in fashion then post a link.  I better let a expert help you with your red ball problem.

Hey dgashk I overlooked the first link. I went back to it and checked out the other...heres what ive done so far...

Replaced the drive with the red dot to a WD Red drive.

Tried different sata(data) cable & sata (power) cable

Tried different port on Mobo

Tried new PSU

So since new drive that would rule out the bad sector problem. Im not sure what else to do? Thanks!

please forgive me but I cant seem to find in the wiki or anywhere how to enable the smart on the drive. I installed smarthistory in the boot file I tried to run a short scan and it tells me

"SMART Disabled. Use option -s with argument 'on' to enable it.

(override with '-T permissive' option)"

I feel like ive been able to solve this problem on my own or with help before but i cant figure it out this time. Thanks

Try "smartctl -a /dev/sdX" where X is the letter of the drive in question.  Then post the result in the thread.  That is what I think he wants you to do.

Hey Bob im not sure what im doing doing wrong. I created a folder called smarthistory in the main directory. I booted to that folder via cmd/w admin rights using telnet. I ran the "smartctl -a /dev/sdX" replacing x with my disk letter. and i still get the "SMART Disabled. Use option -s with argument 'on' to enable it.

(override with '-T permissive' option)" . Thanks again!

You don't need anything smarthistory unless you want to use it with unMenu so you don't need a folder called smarthistory or the php files.

The error you got sounds like you need to issue the -s command to turn on smart on the drive.  So that would be "smartctl -s /dev/sdX".  If that returns without any errors (post them if it does) then you need to enter "smartctl -a /dev/sdX" again and post the results here for dgaschk.

Obviously I don't know the arguments well enough to advise you.  The s argument must have parameters based on your results I think you need "smartctl -s on /dev/sdX" but maybe you should get confirmation from someone that really knows how to use smartctl.

The argument is "-s on"

So just to clarify and confirm it would be "smartctl -s on /dev/sdX" without quotes correct? Thanks again!
