April 23, 201412 yr I'm in the process of building my first unRaid. Link in the sig. I ordered a pre-formatted flash drive with the pro license. I'm sure it will be 5.0.5. Was just wondering if I should plan on updating this before installing any apps? I see at least some that are not compatible with vs 6. Not sure how much trouble it would be to try updating after everything is setup.
April 23, 201412 yr Updates to core unRAID are usually pretty easy. It is the addons that sometimes break. Unless you are determined to get started right away with experimenting with Virtual Machines, there is no good reason to upgrade to v6 betas yet.
April 23, 201412 yr Agree -- stay with the stable release v5.0.5 for now unless you need v6 for its virtualization features. Upgrading UnRAID itself is VERY simple (just copying a few files to the flash drive and rebooting) ... but there are a few stability issues with the hypervisor and quite a few add-ons/plug-ins aren't ready for the 64-bit version yet.
April 23, 201412 yr Author Thanks. I planned my server to be able to use Xen eventually, but don't have any real need for it in the short term. Just didn't want to put myself in a situation where I had spent a lot of time setting up apps and then have that time wasted if I couldn't use them with version 6. I take it though that any public release candidates for v6 are still months in the future maybe?
April 23, 201412 yr I take it though that any public release candidates for v6 are still months in the future maybe? No real way to know what Tom's release schedule is likely to be -- but based on past experience I'd think that's a reasonable estimate (v5 Betas until final was more than 2 years).
April 23, 201412 yr I think Tom learned a valuable lesson with the version 5.0 beta, rc, release schedule and is taking a more aggressive approach with version 6. He also seems to be focusing on just the key basics - upgrading core components to x64 and adding virtualization to satisfy the forward leaning customer base. I would be surprised if we have a 2 year cycle, but with that said, I do think we are several months from any RCs at this point.
April 23, 201412 yr Agree -- there's much better focus on v6, so I don't expect it to as long as v5, but is still likely to be several months away from what I'd consider a "recommendable" stable system.
