Cant access root from my mac now I have a password (Solved)

Featured Replies

So as recommended I added a password to the root account. I can log into the webGui fine just enter root, password. But if I try and click on Tower in mac os x finder I can't enter using the root, password combination. I have to use one of the user shares I setup to login to Tower in finder and it seems slower at transferring files across than the root account did with no password. Im using mavericks and even if I enter the username and password and save it, I still have to enter them again on a reboot of the mac or server.

I have one share for guest and one for dad. The guest is set to read only and dad is set to read and write. I also have a few shares that I don't want to let the guest account have access to but I can't find anywhere to exclude the guest account in the user shares or the shares, say Pictures for example. Is it because Im only running the basic unRAID?

Also is there any way I can setup a user share to allow read and write but not delete anything, this would allow me to download fanart e.t.c. with openelec but stop anyone deleting files, or is this something I do in openelec as i see it has a setting saying allow file renaming and deletion.

What version of unRAID are you running?

As far as read/write and no delete, there's no ability for that as far as I know.  The ability to write, by its nature, gives the ability to delete.

Thanks Bob but not really, in the user guides it says you can set Users Shares with Valid and invalid users but I can't see it in version 5.05 which Im running, it was obviously in an older version and it seems strange its not in the latest. I can't think of any reason Tom would remove this option and I can't see it anywhere else in the WebGui.

Thanks for the advise about read and write sureguy, I thought that would be the case. I still find it strange that I can login to the WebGui with username: root and the password but finder on the mac will only let me use my User Shares.

I should have quoted your post better:

That is the part I was thinking of that my link might help with.

So from the link you could have in smb-extra.conf:

[fanart]

    path = /mnt/user/fanart

    read only = yes

    guest ok = yes

[fanart_rw]

    path = /mnt/user/fanart

    read only = no

    guest ok = no

    browseable = no

    browsable = no

So you would have read only access to the fanart share.  The fanart_rw share is read/write but is NOT browsable and has no guest access.  Now did that help any with that part of your question?  But maybe bjp999 knows how to setup what you are talking about since he posted in that link.

Not sure if this is what you are referring to, but root named login is not allowed to access files, only webgui and console. You need to add another user and use it if you want secure file access.

Thanks for your reply and help Bob, I think the problem is for me is stopping my 4 and 5 year old from deleting stuff on Openelec and in turn my server.

What I have done is setup a kids user share with read only access and linked to that on their Openelec box and locked all the top menu's so they can change or download different fanart, posters e.t.c. My Openelec box has read and write access and they are not allowed to touch it. All I need to do now is add MYSQL on the unRAID server and a central store for fan art etc and I would like to try network boot although I don't know how long this takes as Openelec boots in 10 seconds from cold and I wouldn't want to wait much longer for the boxes to boot over the network from an SSD in my server. I seem to remember PeterB has a similar setup.

I just loving unRAID with Dynamix WebGui and a few plugins, its so easy for me and the help on the forum when I have a problem is amazing, why I went with WHS 2011 and ............ at first I will never know.

O yes it was because of the two parity drive option, but now I have off site backups I don't care about this anymore.

But if I have no password setup on unRAID then I can jut click on Tower in Mac finder and drag and drop files easily. Its only when I setup a password for root user that I can't access it anymore. Is the root account not just like another user account but with top level/admin type access, the same as another user account with read and write settings.

Jonathanm I think I understand now. with no password on the root user it just allows full access to unraid shares within finder, but as soon as I give it a password it locks out and finder has to be used with a user share.

One question though. If I have a share called dad for access to unRAID from say xbmc, is it advised to also use this user account to login to unRAID using mac finder or should I setup another user account to do this. In other words if Im playing a film on unRAID from user account dad and I try and access or copy another film to unRAID from the same user account on my mac, will it make any difference from saying logging in with a different account to copy a file over to unRAID. i.e. one account for xbmc and finder on my mac, or a user account for xbmc and a different user account for access to unRAID from my mac finder.

I think you meant user called dad, and you can have as many or as few accounts as you want, and assign each one the access rights you want. It doesn't really matter if you use the same account from multiple machines. If you want each person and device in the household to have their own account and password so as to allow different people access to different shares, go right ahead. If you only care about full access vs read only, then just have 2 users, one with full rights, the other with read only. The only hard and fast rule that you stumbled on is that the account named root has no access to shares. Any other linux legal username can be assigned whatever rights you want, and be used to access the shares from any client with the privileges you assigned.

Thanks Johnathanm thats cleared that up for me but what I can't understand is this. If I go into my share "Pictures" and then into SMB Security I have assigned it as secure and it shows users, dad and guest. I have dad set to read and write and at the moment guest set to read only, but I want to set the guest to no access and there is no setting for it. I don't want my guest account to be able to access my Pictures share. Why is there no option for this?

Thanks

You want private, not secure. See here.

Yes but private is blanked out, I can't select it.

What unRAID license do you have?  User level security is not available on the free license.  The differences between licenses is covered here

From you signature you appear to already have at least one unRAID Pro license?  Assuming that is the case then you want to take advantage of the promotion offering additional keys of the same type for $30.

Ha Ha thats very observant of you. Well I should get my Sandisk keys through on Monday and then I can send the GUID off to Tom. I just updated the profile a few days ago and as I knew I was getting the server pro and spare keys I updated it to reflect. But for a few more days I have to run basic.
