[SOLVED] Be Careful creating new dir levels on existing installations

Hello everyone,

I am a happy customer of Limetech and love my unraid installation. I can't believe I ever got by without it. Even worse I can't believe I ever used to waste my money on Readynas devices etc.

I am a regular user of the forum, but not really a contributor. Virtually every issue I have had with this great software someone has had before so my issue is usually solved with a Google search of the site.

Anyway, I came across an issue this morning which had me amused for a while. As with most people, once the setup of the has was done and well tested I left it. Don't open the settings page anymore - only time I log onto the box is to use the web UI of SABnzb etc

For some reason I did this morning while I was watching a movie and noticed that the cache drive was spinning and the others were not. No biggie, this movie must have just recently been transferred to the nas. Erm, hang on - this movie is Ooooold. So I look at the contents of the cache drive! OMFG!! The mover had not been moving files onto the "array" for months and months. I have been playing new stuff from the cache drive all that time and never noticed.

First thought .... "stupid mover script" lets execute it manually. Click button, go make coffee. Come back - mover script failed. Disk full. No biggie, thats fine. Disks get full. But hang on .... how can this be that it is failing, yes Disk 1 (3TB) is full - but the other two disks (also 3TB) no where near full, why aren't you moving on those.

Second thought .... "stupid unraid", when I upgraded from RC to final of v5 maybe my Split Level got changed back to level 1 or something. Nope ... Level 2, Waterfall. I remember I setup everything like the wiki. E.g. Media>HD Movies>Movie hmmmm.

Third thought .... "stupid user" *slaps head* ... at some point a while back, I decided I wanted more granularity on the media share, so created "another" level. E.g. Media>Movies>HD Movies>Movie. Crap, no wonder the mover wasn't working, because it is trying to keep that folder now on one disk. Disk gets full, mover fails.

Anyway, It worked while I had my level setup as per the wiki and on Split Level 2 for over a year so the spread of media across disks is fairly good. So decided to just change Split Level to 3. Manually run the Mover, BOOM files are now being transferred to the "array".

I guess my cache disk has had a bit more of a workout for the past 6 months than it should. My Parity is fine so I am not in any issue I guess. Perhaps if it had been running as I initially setup then my media would have been spread a bit more over the drives - but Parity is fine and I have a backup so I am good.

Maybe there would have been a better solution to just changing the Split Level to 3, but I couldn't see a downside.

Just sharing .... Happy Sunday!

**UPDATE**

Seems that the Split Level of 4 wasn't quite enough and the Mover still wanted to copy files to the Full disk.

Thought about moving files from the full disk to the others, but then thought Why?

Had a look at the Wiki and it indicates you can practically disable levelling by setting a "High" Level so that all files are copied across disks as free space is available.

Given that the system organises everything so having files "all over" doesn't really matter, set the level to 6 (which is higher than anything I have" and run the Mover again.

Things seem to be moving from the Cache drive again!

LOL! What a fun Sunday!

You can also simply not set a split level (leave it blank).

The only reason for the split level (for me) on a media server is so that all the files that are part of the same movie/episode are on the same disk and there is no playback interruption should another disk have to spin up.  This was probably a bigger issue when movies were split among multiple files (like a DVD file structure) but with containers like mkv it's not usually a problem.

Happy Sunday! TIA for marking this solved  ;D
