[SOLVED] Missing disks after adding new disk

Featured Replies

So I've been using the free version of Unraid (5.0-rc10), but yesterday I purchased a license and a new 2 TB HD. While I was waiting for the registration key to be emailed, I installed the new HD, thinking it wouldn't hurt anything and that it just wouldn't show up in the array. Well, after installing it and powering up again, one of my 2 HDs showed as "missing". Of course, the new disk wasn't visible at all in the admin panel. So I shut down again, and unplugged the new disk from the motherboard. Now, only the parity disk shows up. One of the other disks shows as "missing", and the other shows as "not installed".

On the "missing" disk, the serial number is listed below the dropdown, but it isn't available in the dropdown menu. The other doesn't even show the serial number.

I did receive the license key by email, and hoping that would fix this, I added that to the flash drive. Of course, that didn't help at all. Shows the same thing, just more empty slots now.

Any idea what's wrong here, and what I can do to fix it? I was thinking of trying a "new config" but I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not. Is that likely to fix the problem, or just create new problems?

Thanks

Here's what you can do.  If you know which device is your parity device, you can definitely use new config, but make sure you assign the same device to the parity slot.

It will invoke a parity sync when you do this.  If you know FOR SURE that you haven't written any data to the array since you did this, you can click "parity is valid" to skip the sync, but I almost always just let it run anyway.

Thanks jonp. Unfortunately, now a new issue has popped up. I was checking the power connections to all the drives, and tried swapping a them around to see if that might have something to do with the problem. I finally was able to see 4 of the 5 HDs, so I think I may be on the right track. But now, I can't connect to the regular GUI. I can't connect by telnet, either. No Sabnzbd, sickbeard, or couchpotato either. Strangely, I can get to Unmenu (tower:8080), but as far as I can tell this doesn't allow me to do anything I need to. It does show that disk 1 (which was previously "missing") is there, so I hope that's a good sign.

Were you doing this while the array was on and running?  Have you tried a reboot?

Before even booting unraid, check the hardware is working and see that all disks are connected and recognized. Maybe check the BIOS if all disk are shown there, this will only work in they are on the motherboards SATA ports.

If a disk shows up as "missing" then that means it is not being seen at the Linux level.

The most likely cause is that you disturbed some of the connections (power or SATA) while installing the new disk.  Another less likely cause is that the extra disk has mean you have exceeded the capacity of your power supply, and as a result a drive has dropped offline.

As was mentioned, you should check that all drives can be seen at the BIOS level.  If that is not happening then they will not be visible in unRAID either.

Thanks all for the input.

jonp - It was shutdown when I was swapping the power connections. I've rebooted several times.

itimpi & dikkiedirk - The new disk is not showing up in BIOS, but the original 4 are. At this point, I'm trying to just get back to everything working as it was before the new disk was added. I'm only able to get to Unmenu, but can't get to the regular GUI. I am able to connect by telnet again (wasn't able to yesterday, not sure what changed). In Unmenu, it shows disk1 & the parity disk as OK, and for disk2 it says DISK_DSBL_NP.

So far, yelling at it and banging my head against the wall is not working. I would try yelling louder, but I think the neighbors are starting to worry.

I figured out part of the problem, and now my original disks are all back online. It looks like it was getting stuck on the Couchpotato plugin during bootup. I removed that, and now the array is back up.

Now I need to figure out why it's not seeing the new disk, and see if I can do that without breaking anything else.
