Connecting a SSD cache drive to my Norco 4224 (Icy Dock EZConvert or ?)

Featured Replies

I think that I have finally decided to add a SSD cache drive to my unRAID server.

What would be the best way for me to go about doing this?  I'm fairly certain that all of my SATA connectors are already in use....6 on the MoBo and 16 across (2) Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 8-Port SAS's....and I have 17 data drives running (as of now)

Would purchasing something like this: Icy Dock EZConvert 2.5-Inch to 3.5-Inch SATA SSD / Hard Drive Converter

be a good idea so that I can place it in one of the empty Norco drive bays?

Or do you recommend something else or another way to connect?

Furthermore, would it be best (most cost efficient) to just add a new SATA drive for cache......as my primary reason for adding a cache drive is to ease the transfer of large blu ray rips (30-40GB each)....

Many thanks for listening and for any help/ideas you might have for me...

Yes, those will work.  You can also buy SuperMicro MCP-220-00043-0N and rip the trays out.

AFAIK, you don't need any dock conversions. A 2.5" drive could be installed directly into NORCO drive tray (I have one 2.5" HDD installed this way). (added) If the drive has bottom screw holes (don't all of them do? :) ).

I have my SSD cache drive loose on the floor of the norco beside the mobo (attached to a sata port on the board). Not the best spot, but as it is not mechanical, it does not move/vibrate and has been running there comfortably for several years...

Can you free up one of the sata ports on your board to use for the SSD and keep the trays in the norco for your data drives?

As far as efficiency is concerned, I'm using a SSD cache drive just to max-out my transfer rate over the network. It replaced an old platter drive that topped out well under 100MB/s. That said, if you're willing to throw in a newer platter drive, most of them will saturate a gigabit network nowadays...
