January 14, 201511 yr I see several several unnamed folders in the shares on my server, like shown in the picture. The contents of this folder is the same as the previous. These folders are nested numerous times. I don't have an explanation for this, maybe one of you guys can enlighten me. The only changes that were made to the server are conversion of ReiserFS to XFS and installing cache_dirs. Running 6 beta10a. Can these folders just be deleted?
January 14, 201511 yr Community Expert I usually use UNC paths rather than mapping a drive as you have done, but I too have seen this, but only on a share with a lot of subfolders. Since these don't appear if I look at that share using mc in telnet, I assume it's some quirk of SMB. Since it doesn't really inconvenience me in any way I have never bothered to report it.
January 14, 201511 yr Author It isn't a big deal but it is strange that I never saw this in 4.7 or several 5betas and final it now shows up on unraid 6. It is not only visible on my Windows PCs but also on my Dune mediaplayer.
January 14, 201511 yr Community Expert Seeing these 'ghost' folders is certainly not something I have seen before on v6. It might be worth going in at the Linux command line level and doing a 'ls -l' on the parent of one of those folders to see if they are real folders or not.

No they are not real, which is why I said it must be a quirk of SMB. The folders do not actually exist in unRAID. I only see this in my Torrents folder, which has about 3000 subfolders. I had this on unRAID 5 also. Trying to open one of these unnamed subfolders in Windows Explorer doesn't go anywhere. Windows Explorer stays in the parent folder.

These folders are nested numerous times. They are a real folder, but the folder name has a character in it which is giving windows a brain fart If you rename the offending folder either via the command line or via mc and remove the offending character, windows will then be able to see it properly. (You'll be able to tell which folder needs a rename because a character in it has an accent, or is showing up as a rectangle, etc)

Navigate to that folder's parent directory (/../mnt/user/Music1) with mc at the console, and look for a folder with messed up characters in it. Rename it. You can't do this from windows. Only from the console with mc. One of your torrents or NZB's had an invalid character in its name
January 15, 201511 yr Community Expert The way I was able to identify mine in mc was sorting by timestamp. The timestamp Windows was displaying for the "unnamed" folder was in fact the actual timestamp of the folder as viewed in mc. I might never have bothered to look through 3000 folders otherwise.
January 15, 201511 yr Can these folders just be deleted? BTW, I wouldn't delete that folder through windows. Since windows cannot make heads or tails of what's going on due to the invalid character, I'd hate to see what might happen if you try and delete it through windows before fixing the issue. In my case when it happens, its only in a temporary d/l folder which I pretty much check out every day so its easy to find manually.
