January 21, 201511 yr Hi all, This morning I noticed that sabnzbd failed to copy a download over. When I logged into my unraid server one of my drive (drive 3) had a red ball next to it. I stopped the array and restarted it and drive 3 now shows as not installed. I've attached my syslog - what are the best next steps? syslog.zip
January 21, 201511 yr See here: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Troubleshooting#What_do_I_do_if_I_get_a_red_ball_next_to_a_hard_disk.3F You may need to reboot if the disk has stopped responding.
January 21, 201511 yr I usually powerdown if a disk drops from its controller. Not sure if necessary, but figure that fully resets the controller.
January 21, 201511 yr I usually powerdown if a disk drops from its controller. Not sure if necessary, but figure that fully resets the controller. I know there are certain things a drive only does after power cycling, so it's probably best to give both the drive and the controller a fresh start from a totally powered down state.
January 22, 201511 yr Author Thanks for the advice, I have rebooted and can now select the drive from the dropdown to assign it. When I do it shows a blue ball next to it and says when I start the array it will start a data rebuild - is this safe? Will it remove any data that existed on that drive?
January 22, 201511 yr If you leave the slot unassigned (no disk in the slot), you can still start the array and the disk will be simulated with parity and all of the other disks. You can browse the simulated disk and verify that it is looks good, and even copy files from it to your workstation if you want. If the disk looks good, you can stop the array, assign the disk to rebuild onto to the slot, and start the array. The disk will be reconstructed and look identical to the simulated disk contents. If the simulated disk does not look right (e.g., it is unformatted for full of garbage), do not try and rebuild it. Ask for further assistance.
January 25, 201511 yr Author I viewed the disk as you said and was able to see all files and everything looked fine. I rebuilt it but now the drive shows with a red ball next to it. I have run a SMART test on the drive (attached) which seems to say no errors and that it passed, but I may be reading it incorrectly. Any advice on next steps welcome smart.txt

Any advice on next steps welcome I looked at your Smart report and I would replace that disk ASAP. The high counts of parameters 5, 196, 197 and 198 are indicators of a failed (or soon to be failed) hard drive. You might be able to recover the disk by running a preclear cycle on it but (in my opinion) you would be asking for trouble if you used it. You have already gotten three and a quarter years of operating time out of it.
