Streaming Server and UPnP in unRAID

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am restarting the thread "Front End Devices & UPnP" and have copied the entries related to streaming servers, since I think this is an interesting topic.

Once I have an unRAID server up an running, I think it would be great if it also could stream movies and music to media clients. Some solutions I have come across includes:

* SlimServer for music

* Oxylbox based on PHP for music/photos/movies, but also e.g. with the possibility to control TV-cards (Hauppauge) in the server. A great number of plugins have been developed by various people.

* Wizd, which seems to be getting to the number one choice of open source streaming servers.

* UPnP, which would be a more general way of streaming media, but with much less suger compared to what more dedicated streaming servers can do for you.

I am currently using the first three with a SqueezeBox for music, and Transgear 700 M10 and Pinnacle Showcenter 1000g for movies, photo, music etc, but currently my WinXP PC is the server. Since I am initiating an unRAID project, these things would also be nice to have and always on.

Therefore, it would be nice to gather comments on solutions which includes media clients on the one end and a server running unRAID and additional software on the other, i.e. no other cumputers involved.

Just wondering what other people were using to access their media (front end devices)

I came across a product made by a company named GM Inc, Model# 3500 OPT MG - Digital Media Gateway Dix Player http://www.galaxymetalgear.com/products.HTML which looks like it could be used as an option to a PC if my unraid server were a UPnP enabled NAS device, I did a quick search on UPnP software and found something called TwonkyMedia http://www.Twinkled.DE/Products/Twinkled/index.HTML which some other media server companies seem to be using to enable UPnP on their server products. I realize this would not be the optimal solution (no PVR) and I am looking at this for secondary viewing i.e. bedroom, kitchen...

My first question to the community is has anyone that knows more about the unRAID software know if it might be even remotely possible to install TwonkyMedia ?

It did not look like support for UPnP was high on Tom's "Sticky: Ye Olde Laundry List" but I think that a non PC front end combination with the unRAID server could really be a powerfull media center solution.

Any other users have suggestions for non PC front end devices that have worked well with the unRAID server?

Also, its seems that a lot of people over on AVS really like Tivx5000, you should take a look at that solution as a possibility as well.

Interesting this comes up now.  I needed a break last night so I fired up the Link Player 2 and downloaded it's latest firmware.  Also went here and downloaded and installed latest wizd on my own media server.

Well, surprisingly, the combination isn't too bad.  For someone who doesn't want to build an HTPC, I'd say a Link Player 2 is useable.

So would anyone be interested in a wizd download for unRAID?  The distribution from above site is for 'debian' distro and kind of a pain to extract & set up for unRAID, but I can repackage it without much difficulty and save someone some time.

Current 'spare time' project is getting the latest Slimserver running.

I'll get a chance to look at TwonkyMedia maybe this evening.

Tom,

Any chance we can get Slim server going on the box? I received a SqueezeBox for x-mas and would really, really love to access my unRaid that has tons and tons of music :)

Thank you,

Mike

Hey Tom/Gang:

Stumbled into the "new" (not yet released) Slingcatcher by SlingMedia (Slingbox) from CES 2007.  Interesting concept especially for US!!!  ???  By design it is "networked - TCP/IP - ethernet" with Component, S-Vid, HDMI outputs.  This may be the missing "link" to TV/Projection for movies w/o an intermediate device, eg HTPC/MCE for our UnRaid's.  Pretty brief write-up from CES but lots of potential - should be out Q2.

FWIW: I'm working on getting slimserver to work on my unraid-dev platform. If anyone is interested, I'll be putting my progress in my other post. Its in user customizations - Root Security. Anyways, just thought I've give you all a little hope :)

awesome news.  I can't wait to see the write up.  As soon as I get the time to get unRAID up and running on vmware I'm planning on trying to get Slimserver up and running but I'd much prefer to not break ground myself.

Well its not going to be so much a write up as a final release type image most likely. I'll probably include a lot of mainstream programs, as well as a control panel to turn each service off and on. I MAY do a writeup, but its going to be VERY VERY long, and will be hard to follow for anyone who has never messed with linux, and will still be somewhat complicated for those who are new to linux. The writeup will only be made if theres enough of an interest, but I think a stable image should be enough for the average user. I SHOULD be able to get all the stuff I intend to release on a 256 meg card after I strip the build utilities out of it. There wont be a lot of extra space most likely to play with on a 256 meg chip, but we'll see after I'm all done. The best thing to do would be to resize the ext2 partition to use up the rest of the space on your flash drive. Anyway, I'm going off topic :P You get the idea tho. I will keep my thread updated on my progress on everything. Any ideas or other input about the release I'm working on should be directed to that thread.
