so, i stopped and restarted Samba, and it re-exported my share, and it popped right up in my Network folder.

Hi,

ok, you guys will probably hate this, but....  i wanted to check if re-starting Samba, since it worked once, would behave the same way if i re-created the scenario.  so, i tried changing to wireless adapter, etc. and when i was back on and restarted Samba, it did not work this time, so i'm out a tower again.  i wouldn't mind having to type the address in to open op shares, but i can't play blu-rays that way, so i need Tower appearing in Network.

Is resetting router going to fix this?  and then i can delete wireless adapter and just leave it alone :(

What about people with laptops, who connect to at least 2, and who knows how many more, networks a day, they're changing networks all the time, some of them, so none of these people can go home and enjoy a fully functioning unraid server, because they switch networks?

That just doesn't sound right, how can they exclude that many people.  Isn't that exactly what i'm doing?

thanks, and much regards,

rlr

Some ideas...

I would try just using the "route add" command to add in a route using the wireless adapter to the internet with a "metric" higher than the internal network... then, use "route delete" when you do not want it used.  This is the most complicated thing to try, though, so leave it for last...

Or try the

ipconfig /renew

command on your PC to release and renew all the network connections.  It might restore your network connections.

Or... You might need to look into who is the "master browser" for your PC on your network when connected to the two different networks..  It might be a role taken over by the remote wireless LAN when you use it.

See lots of tips here: http://www.chicagotech.net/browser.htm#Cant%20see%20any%20or%20only%20some%20computers%20in%20My%20Network%20Places

According to them, you would need to turn off the network "Client for MS Networks" on the wireless network adapter as per a tip given on that link when using multiple network adapters:

"4) Uncheck Client for MS Networks on the (wireless network) card."

You'll find it under "Properties" on the "Network and Sharing Center" page on Vista.

wow, thanks a lot for all your help with this.

omg, i can't believe i didn't think of ipconfig/renew, it's one of the few command lines i know, but it didn't actually help, unfortunately.

i ended up trying to reset my router, and do ipconfig/renew again, nothing; and a few other things, already mentioned.  finally i uninstalled both drivers, and have since only installed the driver for my LAN connection.  at first that didn't work either, but for the f of it, i spun up all the drives, and then it appeared.  yea!

so now if i do add the wireless driver again, i have to keep them both running?

can i limit the LAN connection to local network, or something like that, if i want to use p2p, and just use wifi, without having to disable anything?

Thanks!

Some torrent clients allow you to bind to a specific interface/network adapter.  Azureus might, I am not sure.  Just do some checking via google and see if you come up with anything.  That way you can tell the torrent client to use the wireless connection and everything else to use the wired connection.

still haven't installed that wireless adapter....  what's strange though is (at least i think it's strange), is that sometimes when i reboot, I still lose Tower, and it doesn't seem like anything i try and do will make it come back.  I'm trying some of the things that worked before, like restarting Samba, or spinning up drives, so like last night, after a reboot, Tower was gone, and although previously (once) when I opened TMT3 to play a blu-ray, without Tower visible, since the last file opened was from bd share (which is always the case with TMT3, almost always), it still went to it, even though it wasn't available under Network.  Last night that wasn't the case though, could still nav to it from explorer, but wouldn't show up in TMT3, or Network.  I was doing some other stuff, so just left it alone, then this morning I wake up, open up Network, and there's Tower.  Shouldn't it be staying connected now that I have one network adapter that i'm leaving enabled?  It seems to just randomly show up, I don't really think anything i'm doing is affecting it.  Once it shows up, it seems to stay there, at least until i have to reboot, or something.

Could this be more fine-tuned, or is it just the nature of how it works, and that's how it is?

I looked into utorrent, didn't see anything specific to network adapters, i've registered with their forum though, so I will do some investigating over there.  I'll report back, if anyone is interested in the subject.

Trying to think of other ways around this....

I looked all through the network adapter preferences, but didn't see anything that looked like it would help.  BUT, is it possible to control, say upload limit of adapter, like can i set it to download only, while the wireless uploads.  or, can I keep an adapter only in local (home) network (temporarily), or something like that?

thanks,

rlr

This is an embarrassingly simple suggestion, but worth a try, have you ever used Refresh (usually the <F5> key) in the Network Neighborhood?  In Windows XP, it is also on the View menu.  Seems as if that was implemented correctly, it should recheck the network for all available devices.

yeah, i refresh all the time (when i'm looking for it).  it's been with me for a while now, but not sure when i've rebooted, i think a couple times.  i really want to add that other adapter, for wireless, i have to read up on it some more, and i really don't want to lose tower all together again, i guess as long as i don't disable lan adapter that shouldn't happen.  i've been busy the last few days and  haven't had time to mess with it, but hopefully this week.

thanks for the posts,

so check this out, i reinstalled my wireless adapter, but left it not connected to anything, with default settings, and without touching my lan adapter.  now tower has disappeared from Network again (and from my BD player).  the way i understood it, if i left lan adapter connected/enabled, it would keep a connection to Tower, whether or not there was a wireless adapter added?

thanks!

more on adding adapter:  it left my LAN connection on Local and Internet, but the wireless connection was only Local, I really didn't want to start playing around with it, but shouldn't i be able to be on Internet for both, if i can assign utorrent to one adapter, then i would assume yes.  I tried to setup my static ip for wireless but it gave me the subnet mask warning so i did not proceed.

Why did my Tower disappear when i added wireless adapter, and why can't i get it back?

What subnet mask am i supposed to use if the default is taken by other adapter, and why is the wireless Local only?

thanks again,

Since you do not have control over the wireless network setting a static IP would probably be a bad thing, and not work very well.

You should probably set the static IP on your wired connection and let the wireless get what it wants to get.  The downside to this is that you might have problems with getting utorrent set up.  I would just periodically check the IP of the wireless adapter to see if it has changed and then update utorrents settings accordingly.

As for Tower going by by again... I can't help you much there.  I highly suggest you just map \\tower to a drive letter in Windows Explorer.  Then it will always be there anyway.  I do this on the windows machine I have, the Mac machine I have, and my room mates computers as well.

hey Prostuff1,

wow, time is flying.  for the wireless adapter (still currently not installed until I can figure out the best way to deal), i do have a static ip, but i have ports forwarded to it also, like the business next door, i know the owner, so he lets me on there.  is that what you meant?  still cool to use static ip?  yes for utorrent, it pretty much stinks without having a port forwarded, even then i'm struggling for bandwidth sometimes.  i haven't yet worked out the IP Bind thing for utorrent, so don't actually have wireless on there right now, haven't had the time to put into it, been doing other stuff, it's good to get away from the screen though.  i've got the network drives setup for my shares now, so that is much better, and i setup my roommate's computer for him, he is stoked too.

thanks,

rlr
