Cheap / Efficient Intel Chip

Featured Replies

Didnt see a subforum for CPUs so Ill post this here.

My current build (see post history) wont get online and the mobo is just a older hand-me-down from a retired desktop. Bios issues and with a baby at home, I need to fix it without spending another week doing diagnostic.

Im on a budget, so Im really not looking to invest $500 on upgrading the mobo and CPU at the moment.

I have an extra dell mobo at home that is about 2 years old. Socket LGA 1155. It originally had a i5 in it, and i ended up replacing both the mobo and the cpu while figuring out which one was the broken one. Mobo is still good and just collecting dust.

Can I just pick up a Pentium dual core, 3.0 like this for $60? Or, any other suggestions in the cheap price range? While I would love to fix my issue for $60, I can budget max $150-200 if there is something in the range (mobo+cpu) that will have more longevity.

Im not against switching both to AMD if needed. Its just from what Ive read, intel will run cooler and Im in the south, so cool is a good thing.

All I really do is store media (movies, tv), sickbeard, couchpotato, and stream to 1 tv in the house using Kodi/XBMC. I use plex for the tablet and cell phones, so on occasion, there might be 1 plex client running and kodi streaming 1 tv show. thats about it.

Thanks for any insight.

Yes, a Pentium G2030 will work fine, assuming it's supported by your motherboard (it most likely is, since the board is a Socket 1155 board).    It's got plenty of "horsepower" for most UnRAID uses (Passmark 2918).

Don't forget to buy some memory if you need it.

Agreed with garycase, the G2030 will be fine.

My unRAID test rig is an old Asus B75 board with an even older Pentium G620 (dual core 2.6GHz Sandy Bridge), and it runs Plex transcodes fine.  You can get plenty of used S1155 chips off eBay, I wouldn't be bothered buying a new one.

You could get an old i3-2120 or 2100 for next to nothing off the web, and it'll do a great job.

The rule of thumb for Plex is I think a passmark score of 2000 per transcode.  So that may help in deciding which CPU to get.

I found a few on ebay and the like for $80. would that be considered 'next to nothing' for this? Cant really find it much cheaper

Yes, that's a good price for these CPUs.    But as you've noticed, it's not a huge price savings, since it's still a relatively recent generation.

Personally, I'd stay with a new CPU, as I'm always a bit skeptical of used processors, and the price differential isn't that great.

The G2030 you originally asked about is a good choice -- only draws 55w and scores 2918 on PassMark.  Plenty of "horsepower" for most UnRAID uses.

If you want a bit more "oomph", look at the G2130 ... just a few $ more and scores 3121 on PassMark.

As a reference, the used CPU's you listed use more power (65w) and score 3621 (i3-2100) and 3867 (i3-2120) on PassMark.    If you want that level of power, I'd be inclined to just buy a new Core i3-3220T (~ $118) ... it scores 3714 on PassMark and only uses 35w of power !!  It's also a generation newer than the other CPUs (Ivy Bridge vs Sandy Bridge).

You can get a lenovo ts140 server new on ebay for $200.  COmes with 4 gig of ecc ram and a i3 socket 1150 cpu.  If you need more hp later you can upgrade to a $250 xeon.

thanks all.. this definitely helped.

slight curveball...

but my personal desktop has a Core i3-3220 and an ASUS mobo. Looks like it will become my unraid donor (i dont really use it all too often).  Asus - maybe not this one, but pretty close (ASUS P8H61-M LE/CSM R2.0 LGA 1155 Intel H61 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard) http://www.amazon.com/P8H61-M-CSM-R2-0-Intel-Motherboard/dp/B008NA1K0S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1425311065&sr=8-2&keywords=asus+1155

I'm moving in a few months and need to severely cut back on the 'clutter' in my house. Realistically, I prob wont have room for a desktop for a few years as i will probably be renting a smaller place for a while (new govt job starts this year, 4 months out of town training, then probably forced move and we will just rent a small place for 2-3 years, save up cash, and then buy in the new city). I have a decent laptop that the wife and i share. Ill throw ubuntu on an older laptop i have and wife can use that for web browsing.

That'll work fine.

My other unRAID box is on an Asus B75 board, with a G1610T, and it works fine.  The G1610T is dual core 2.3GHz at 35W.  Idles at about 24W at the wall.  I'm seriously considering making it my production box if LT can't sort out the Haswell issues soon.

Sounds like a good plan -- and certainly just re-purposing a current PC is the least expensive option  :)

It also has the advantage that the desktop can be moved to an unobtrusive spot (e.g. a closet) and run "headless" once you've got UnRAID configured ... sounds like that's going to be a big advantage for your near-term housing situation.

Pentium G3258.  LGA 1150 socket.  4020 passmark score.  micro center sometimes has it on sale for $49.  newegg sells it for $69.  a LOT of bang for the buck.

Except, of course, that a socket 1150 CPU won't fit in a Socket 1155 motherboard  :)

Anything can be made to fit if you apply enough force....

(I'm joking -nobody try this at home!)
