April 14, 201511 yr Greetings, Seems I'm going through an "Issue" Stage with my server! I was in the process of copying some files from one disk to another. I have all my disks setup in "Network Places" (Winxp) so I can easily access them. I stared the copy, then saw the connection was only 100mbps, so I cancelled the copy by hitting the cancel button (I'd only started copying the first file). Rebooted the server and got a 1Gbps connection, then when back to my Disk11 Network place Folder and it was empty. Nada!! Funny thing is, the disk is still full according to unraid. Further, the folder icon on that disk via unraid shows all the movies. Also, my media player can play all the movies on that disk. And under \\Tower\Movies all the movies are shown there as well. But browsing directly to the disk11 folder shows it as empty. Further I have tried to setup a new network place (Same thing) Empty. I have checked to make sure the files aren't hidden - they're not. I have cd'd to \mnt\disk11\Movies directly from the server and all the movies are there. If I browse to the disk11 via other sofware (like PowerDVD) - still see an empty share. I have rebooted both machines. Still nada. Anyone have any ideas on what has happened? Thx.
April 14, 201511 yr Did you reboot the PC as well? You may have some outdated cached info that's no longer valid due to the reboot of the server.
April 14, 201511 yr Author Did you reboot the PC as well? You may have some outdated cached info that's no longer valid due to the reboot of the server. Yes...I did reboot the PC as well. This is a first for me. I'm really stumped! This is the last phase of transferring all the data from my small disks so I can remove them from the array.
April 14, 201511 yr Were your copies all disk -> disk ? i.e. no user share references involved in the copy, so the "user share bug" couldn't have come into play somehow [Doesn't seem likely, as you'd have lost all the data if that was the case -- and clearly it's still there] Can you access the files via Windows Explorer at \\Tower\disk11\Movies ?
April 14, 201511 yr Other things to do to eliminate them as possibilities: Run the New Permissions option on the Tools tab to ensure that all permissions are correct Use the Windows Credentials Manager to clear the current credentials for the unRAID box to ensure authentication information is correct. In theory the above should not make any difference, but they will not do any harm either and if by any chance you are hitting a permissions or authentication issue they can help.
April 14, 201511 yr You may have accidentally created a user share named disk11, and that is what you are seeing. What do you get with v /mnt/user
April 14, 201511 yr Author Can you access the files via Windows Explorer at \\Tower\disk11\Movies ? No to this question. I only ever copy disk to disk. Although, I can still see all the movies in one big share \\Tower\Movies. So if I copy from here I can loose them all? (Via Windows Explorer). I've re-read your post a while ago about this issue, but That seems to be more about copying from say \\Tower\Movies --> \\Tower\Movies. What about copying from \\Tower\Movies --> \\Tower\Disk7\Movies (or perhaps use a temp folder like \\Tower\Disk7\Temp) so it doesn't get confused?

(i) Tools tab is where? Unraid or Windows. I think I remember something in unraid. (ii)I'll look this up. Never heard of it.
April 14, 201511 yr Author You may have accidentally created a user share named disk11, and that is what you are seeing. What do you get with v /mnt/user Returns only the shares expected. This is all very strange.
April 14, 201511 yr Author Okay, I've been looking further. If I click under "Network Places" "Entire Network -->Microsoft Windows Network -->MsHome -->MediaServer -->A List of all the shares. Under here Disk11 doesn't say "Disk share" under comments - and when I click on it says Disk11 is not accessible. Now...if I go back to "Network Places" and Click on Disk11 - it also says Not accessible - whereas everytime before it showed an empty folder. How do I make Disk11 say "Disk share" again?
April 14, 201511 yr Author I DON't believe this!! This time I shutdown both the server and the PC (last time I rebooted) and now Disk11 is back as it should be. Something is definitely trying to mess we me! Lets see how things go. Thx for the help.
April 14, 201511 yr Author I think I spoke too soon. Now I've gone back to Disk9. I only copied half of the disk across yesterday. Now...only the files I copied are showing in the Disk9 share in network places. Yet Disk9 on unraid still has all the files - and I can see them (and play them) through \\Tower\TV Shows. I have never had this issue before and have moved around heaps of files. This is a real mystery! EDIT: I think I might have sorted it out. I created a Temp folder on Unraid to copy the files to and it seems it was conflicting somehow with user shares. I've renamed it something that doesn't conflict and I hope we're away. Time well tell!
April 15, 201511 yr What about copying from \\Tower\Movies --> \\Tower\Disk7\Movies NO !! You do NOT want to copy from a folder to the same folder ... THAT is what can cause the infamous "user share copy" problem, which will result in lost data. NEITHER the source nor the destination should be a user share when they're both referring to components of the same share. ... or perhaps use a temp folder like \\Tower\Disk7\Temp) so it doesn't get confused? YES, this will work fine. This avoids the issue I just mentioned.
April 15, 201511 yr Looking at your subsequent posts, the fact it all "fixed itself" when you shut down (instead of just rebooting) both systems likely means this had something to do with network buffering and/or the IP address table in the router. Forcing both systems to reset the network adapters, and get new addresses from the router may have impacted this. It could also be some strange caching in XP's "Network Places" ... it's been a while since I've looked in detail at XP networking. In any event, simply using a completely different share completely avoids this kind of issue, so this should resolve everything for what you've trying to do here.

I hope this has sorted it out for me. Currently, everything is working as it should. Even my network issue (see another post) seems to have gone away. Sometimes, I think the universe is out to get me! ;D or perhaps it's Loki messing with me. And then there are times I just hate computers! :'( Always appreciated.
