April 15, 201511 yr Version: unRAID OS Version: 6.0-beta14b Fresh build (all repurposed equipment) Asus P8Z68-V Pro i5 2500K, 16GB Memory Supermicro AOC-SAS2LPMV8 8 Port HBA Network Adapter: Intel Pro/1000 EXPI9402PTBLK Drives: Parity: 4TB Seagate (MOBO SATA 6gB/s) Data1: 2TB Hitachi (MOBO SATA 6gB/s) Data2: 2TB Hitachi (MOBO SATA 6gB/s) USB 3.0 32GB SanDisk in USB 2.0 Port Description: Intel Pro/1000 EXPI9402PTBLK shows network unreachable (after boot, ping 127.0.0.1 - network unreachable). How to reproduce: Using the exact same hardware config above, switch UnRaid 5 (recent download, base install) with UnRaid 6beta (recent download, base install). Boot to UnRaid, ping 127.0.0.1. Expected results: Network should be reachable. Actual results: (See side by side comparison of dmesg and ifconfig below in other info) Boot UnRaid 5.0.6 Login Root execute dmesg | grep e1000 http://my.jetscreenshot.com/12412/20150414-39rs-227kb NIC loads and network is reachable. LSMod shows e1000e loaded Reboot with UnRaid 6.0-beta14 Login Root execute dmesg | grep e1000 http://my.jetscreenshot.com/12412/20150414-snd3-218kb Driver appears loaded, but NIC is not, network is unreachable. LSMod shows e1000e loaded However, the card is definitely not active. I noticed during boot (with UnRaid 6) that the activity and link lights are on for the first part of the boot (noting its connected at 1gb during POST) but about halfway through boot to UnRaid, I assume when the NIC driver is loaded, the lights go out. When I ping 127.0.0.1, network is unreachable... Other information: Here's a comparison of the UnRaid 6 (left) vs UnRaid 5 dmesg grep e1000. http://my.jetscreenshot.com/12412/20150415-iszu-251kb Note the Changes in version and IRQ's and that the "Nic is up" msg for UnRaid 5. April 16, 201511 yr Author Update: The UnRaid 6 has been running connected to the network but idling, when I noticed the following on the screen. Is this diagnostic? http://my.jetscreenshot.com/12412/20150416-mfdt-229kb Ctrl-C then displayed the prompt (meaning the system was not locked, as it was the onboard intel ethernet)...
June 21, 201511 yr Is there a resolution to this issue? I've just put together an unRAID 6 box, and have the Intel EXPI9402PTBLK in the PCI slot. I've disabled the board's onboard NIC (realtek). Thanks, Ari
June 21, 201511 yr Author Update. I do not believe that this issue is caused by the adapter. Rather either unRaid is incompatible with the Asus P8P67 Pro mobo - or - the mobo has some marginal issues. The Mobo works fine and without errors with Windows 7 and 8, but always crashes around the 24 hour mark with Unraid 6 (RC3). I've stripped the system down to a few hard drives and no other adapters in the system (panic/crash around 24 hours). I've disabled the onboard Intel eNet and put in the Pro/1000 and ... again, I get a panic around 24 hours - give or take. With 10 drives in the system, it seems to crash sooner. I've given up and moving on to a new mobo. Unless someone has some brilliant ideas. Would MUCH rather use this Mobo, the i5 is a perfect processor. Going to have to settle for less processor...or buy another mobo.
June 21, 201511 yr Are you having an issue? Yes, the Intel NIC doesn't seem to be recognized. I have since re-enabled the onboard realtek nic to get started with testing unRAID - seems to work OK. 2 questions: 1) how can I get this Intel NIC to work? 2) is it worth the trouble (I bought the intel b/c I heard realtek was slow on linux)? Please find diagnostics attached (currently running trial, building parity). tower-diagnostics-20150621-1832.zip
June 21, 201511 yr Will need to investigate with Tom on this next week. It's a rarity that Intel NICs don't work but we will figure it out.

If server comes up and you can't get the log because no network, from console type this: cp /var/log/syslog /boot/syslog.txt Now you have the system log on the flash. Either plug flash into PC to get at it or re-enable onboard NIC.
June 23, 201511 yr Please find requested syslog attached. I note that the motherboard's onboard realtek NIC uses a lot of CPU for the driver during network activities. I would be curious if this Intel NIC will be supported in unRAID. (Bought this b/c Intel PRO/1000 was listed on unRAID's hardware recommendations) If not, I'll have to decide whether to buy another NIC or try another platform. syslog.zip
June 24, 201511 yr Interesting. I bought one of those cards for my lab server way back, planning to try out link aggregation. I installed the card but probably never powered on the server afterwards... Will try to give it a shot later this week.

Yes very odd, it does not seem to be recognized at all. What does output of 'lspci' show (in your above diag zip file it only shows the Realtek nic)? I don't know why it's not discovered at the PCI level, have you tried different PCI slots?
June 24, 201511 yr I have attached the lspci command output. The board only has one PCI slot. lspci.zip
June 24, 201511 yr I have attached the lspci command output. The board only has one PCI slot. Sorry, I'm stumped. Do you have a completely stock syslinux.cfg file? ie, any kernel options that hide that PCI device?
June 24, 201511 yr I downloaded it directly from this website and used the instructions to make a boot-able USB with it. unRAIDServer-6.0.0-x86_64.zip Syslinux.cfg is attached If it helps, I just made and booted an OpenMediaVault usb, and it recognizes the NIC just fine, and connects to network/internet with it. syslinux.zip

What does OMV show when you type 'lspci' command?
June 24, 201511 yr Here is the lspci from OMV, attached. This may be a problem with my motherboard. I spent some time (a lot of it) fiddling with BIOS options and rebooting. The MB has an option to use dual monitors on Integrated + PCI gfx card, and then force some memory allocation for integrated gfx. Apparently, if I tell it that there's a graphics card in the PCI slot, it turns on and uses the slot. If not, then slot is off... That may be why the (only) PCI slot didn't appear in lspci. So, for now, I have the Intel NIC up and running. At least for now. I know the previous poster had his crashing consistently after 24h. Sorry about the run-around on this, but thanks for looking at it. omvlspci.zip
