October 28, 201510 yr I have two children under 8. They are getting a TV. This makes me wonder what is a recommendation for accessing the content from unRAID? Previously all TV control was under parent control, and I'll admit my three remote (TV/PC/Sound) OpenElec setup just wont work. I don't want "Daddy come up stairs and turn on the TV". I'm pretty flexible on the solution. Coworkers swear by AppleTV, but I'm not sure they have small kids. I have a TV (HDMI input) and ethernet. What to put in between for the kids, has to be a single remote and very easy to use?
October 29, 201510 yr Most of the commercial streaming services (Netflix, Amazon & maybe others) have password protected parental controls. Plex Media Server also has user level exclusions (you allow a user access to "libraries") as long as either the media is rated properly (not a given) or you create a separate "kid friendly" library. Other solutions out there I am sure but these are what I am familiar with.
October 29, 201510 yr Author Thanks for the reply. I already of the two library organization going. What I am most concerned about is ease of use. The old OpenElec setup I have pretty much requires me to turn on and select content. I'm looking to upgrade/replace that with something the kids can run by themselves. I updated the original post to indicate the my area of concern.
October 29, 201510 yr Roku 3 and Plex for the win! If you have a complex setup or need to switch between the Roku/Chromecast/Wii/Xbox/etc, check out the Harmony One remote. A single click turns on the right devices, sets the right inputs, etc.
October 29, 201510 yr Plex and either a Roku or FireTV. Trust me...a four year old can figure it out!
October 29, 201510 yr My Son has been using Openelec since he was 5... I would get a good remote that has all the functions... I have a now old Harmony 900 from Logitech and it fires up the TV, AV Receiver, and controls the HTPC. Get a nice simple skin that put everything front and center. There are also the tablet/smart phone remote controls, but those will not power on any of the devices. Just browse libraries and play items. You will be surprised how quick they learn the stuff. ps. The hardest part is keeping the remote control CLEAN... it gets sticky very quickly, with those small gooey hands.
