How to set up Plex

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

What do I need to install to get Plex up and running and transcoding h265 to my LG Smart TV, which has a Plex installed?

Which docker do I need? Plex, Plex Media Server or Plexpass? Which build?

Do I need to set up an account? Is this a free or payed service?

My TV gas the latest app installed, is registered with login name, password and pin but doesn't find any server on my network. Even though Plexpass docker is running.

I have zero Knowledge of Plex. Please help.

Personally I use Linuxserver.io but there is a tread about the differences between Plex containers here:

A Plex account is good to have, paid or free. The paid one gives you some extras but basic functionality is still very good. Check the Plex site.

If you would like to connect to your server remotely, say from mobile device, your account is the point that connects your device to your server. This is also the way invited friends can connect to your server and you to them. Even my local devices (like my Samsung TV) uses my account to connect to the server, makes authorizations a lot easier once you have a device connected to your account. Note that your server and your TV should be logged in to the same Plex account so make sure to check that they are. I don’t have Plex on LG so I am not familiar with that but probably you should be able to connect directly with the IP to the server as well if nothing else works.

I can’t tell if your TV can play h265 with Direct play (meaning that the TV has inbuilt support for h265). If not your server will transcode the file and send it in a format that your TV can play. Note that transcoding doesn’t only relate to the video format, and involves audio streams as well as subtitles. You don’t need to be a tech geek to use it, it takes care of a lot of things behind the curtains for you. Once you are over the initial setup there is really not much to worry about.

I'm not sure what docker you should use. I'm sure someone else can give you some advice on that.

Make sure you've passed the folders with your media though to your docker, and then navigate to your local plex website to set up everything in plex. it should be

http://[Local Plex Media Server IP Address]:32400/web

You should then be able to create libraries etc.

You need Plex Server running and pointing at your media shares. You do not need to pay for this service, I never have. Limetech maintains its own Plex Server docker and is easy to install. Once this is running and you navigate to the web front end it should become much clearer!

I installed binhexes plexpass docker and added some h265 videos to the library. The can be seen by the plex app on my Dune player but when selecting one to play i get unsupported file, playing a h264 file works without a problem. Perhaps transcoding is broken in either server or client?

Check Plex version in the GUI for your Plex container (Settings and Server). Version 0.9.14.4 and 0.9.14.3 should work 0.9.14.2 is broken. Transcoding is only done by the server.

Thanks,

My binhex plexpass was updated today and plexpass is now on 0.9.14.4. Don't server and client communicate and shouldn't the client "tell" the server that a file needs transcoding? Gonna see later today if this works now with version 0.9.14.4.

The only purpose of installing Plex for me is that I am way too lazy to convert h265 to h264.

Spot on! Plex (Plex Media Server, aka PMS) should ”fix everything” based on what the player tells PMS it can play.

Are Plex Media Server and Plexpass basically the same thing? They are different versions, but what else is different?

Nope, Plex Media Server is the software that is running on your server managing your media library and making sure that any Plex client you might have get a media stream in the format that the client can handle. Simply (?) a client – server setup. You have many different client versions (Android, Windows, Linux etc) as well as many different server versions (Linux, Windows… you get it).

To get the most out of it it’s best to have a Plex account and that is free. The Plexpass is a subscription that gives you some additional features as well but let’s not forget that the money from the subscriptions also pays for the development of the software. This is an ad-free commercial product so money need to come from somewhere  :o

The Dune Plex client isn't a "true client" in the sense that it does not send Plex Server and info about it capabilities. The Dune client is merely accessing Plex server to display catalog info and provides a link to direct play the video file.

So unless Dune puts out a firmware update to support h265 (unlikely at least for my model), you will need to either convert the whole collection to h264 OR (new to latest Plex server) have Plex create "optimized" copies for playback. I am unclear how the direct linking will work when there are multiple files but at least the server will be doing all the conversions for you. :P

I got the impression that initial question was about an LG TV and I assumed a client installed on the TV, not a standalone player. Well, I have been proven wrong before, isn’t directly the first time...  ???

Yeah I see OP switched from TV as client to Dune couple replies in. If there is a proper Plex app for the TV, that might actually be able to induce the needed transcoding.

Not sure but I think some LG TVs got Plex in 2013. Guess a precise model number is a must to be able to check. They release a large number of them every year with different numbers depending on region as well.

It seems both the TV and Dune don't have a good Dune client. On both transcoding isn't working.

Is this in PMS or in Plexpass? Where can I find this? Might be an option.

I believe you have it already since you are running version 0.9.14.4

Yes I found it.

But if I want to go that way I might as well get rid of Plex and find another way of converting. Might try to get handbrake working, again  :) .
