December 6, 201510 yr Author My understanding is that Crashplan allows users to share drive space between their PCs, but that's not what Symform does. I can donate some space on my PC (say, 250GB) on your behalf. That will get you a storage credit for half (125GB) in the Symform cloud. Anything you upload using the credit I've given you by donating my drive space for other Symform users allows you to use their service for free, rather than paying cash. The real distinction is that with Crashplan your backup would go to my machine and my machine alone. Symform takes the data you upload and splits it up on to 96 different storage appliances globally, with the ability to lose any 1/3 and still reconstitute your data. Its a much more significant geographic spread, allowing for peace-of-mind that short of a global catastrophe you will not lose even a single file. When I donate 250GB for someone, none of their data comes back to my NAS. Pieces of thousands of other Symform users files get stored on my appliance in whatever way allows them to spread the risk out best for each of those users. Oh, and it's free. That's still the best part, but this other stuff is neat, too I haven't looked at Crashplan in ages, so if I've got their model wrong please correct me.
December 6, 201510 yr You are correct. CPs model is not that way. But, I can "donate" space to you and let you back up to me. (not the cloud) That, and all other features of crashplan, except cloud, are free.
