schford
So - due to my stupid council :-( we are going to get a bandwidth capped fiber product. Capped @ 200GB I am pretty positive my household uses more than that - 3 kids and youtube along with TV downloads on sky. I found this - http://www.s446074245.websitehome.co.uk/configuration.html - wondered if anyone could dockerise it? Happy to throw some donations into the pot. Cheers stuart Link to comment
BRiT
No means of running DD-WRT on the router and getting JaMon2 or other monitoring going? Link to comment
schford
dont think so have a Billion 7800 DXL - currently using that software to track it on my windows desktop - but would be much nicer to have it running 24/7 on the unraid server. I am loath to spend more on a new router after my unraid server build! The boy toys fund is in serious negative equity ;-) Link to comment
METDeath
If you can run VMs and don't reboot your unRAID often, you can run pfSense in a VM with an Intel PT1000 (dual gigabit Ethernet, PCIEx2? card). Other than that, check your local online classified ads for cheap DD-WRT or Tomato routers. I'm currently using an AM1 Mini ITX build for my pfSense install, a bit overkill but sips power. It has the capabilities for bandwidth tracking and more... Or some folks sell preconfigured pfSense HP thin clients on eBay. Link to comment
schford
Thanks for the feedback - just ordered myself a little pfsense box! Let's see how that works.. Link to comment

schford
it is :-) - just means it is EVEN more in negativity equity now - besides she will never spot a little box ;-) Link to comment

Got a link? I'm contemplating pfsense myself, but I'd like to run it as a client VPN connection full time and using all my bandwidth, so still trying to work out exactly how much grunt I'd need... schford
I got this - http://linitx.com/product/linitx-apu-1d-4gb-3nicusbrtc-pfsense-msata-firewall-kit-black/14244 It is the more powerful 4GB version which I figured would give me more flexibility for VPN etc etc From what I have read that enough grunt to cope with an infinity or Virgin connection at full speed. IF you dont care about VPN etc - the cheaper one is http://linitx.com/product/linitx-alix-2d3-lx800-3nicusb-pfsense-firewall-kit-black/14132 Link to comment

Plus in my wife's eyes if it's little it must be cheap... Bookmarked for after Christmas when I start my new job, so I can figure out exactly how much my wage decrease is going to be (Long story, don't ask, it's a quality of life/long term thing) Link to comment
schford
I took a huge pay cut to setup my own company, so I would be around for the kids more - that was three years ago and it all worked out great! Link to comment
CHBMB
I took a huge pay cut to setup my own company, so I would be around for the kids more - that was three years ago and it all worked out great! Yeah, mine is definitely so I can spend more time at home, and make my job a little less physically demanding. Realising that I probably couldn't keep up the physically running around and responding to the emergency problems at three o'clock in the morning for ever was a big moment. I can already feel myself slowing down and I don't want to be doing this when I'm 50. Thanks for the reassuring words, it is quite intimidating, to go from doing something I can do in my sleep to something I barely know anything about is daunting, but also a little exciting. schford
Just a quick biit of feedback - pfsense box in and working absolutely painless took about 10 mins and then included having to change the IP range it came shipped with and my router - so that all the devices stayed on same ip range. The nice thing is I can also stick another DSL conneciton on to double bandwidth. Link to comment
