New Install Can't see Flash Drive, no directories [SOLVED]

Featured Replies

Just installed a new server, ASUS M5A97 EVO - which I've had working on unRaid 5.

Formatted USB

Copied 6.1.6 files

change network/ident files

Booted just fine

Login root, no password (first login)

LS display nothing, just the prompt again.

cd /

cd /config

get file or directory not found...

Prompt displays, but there's no file system loaded anywhere.  No root, nothing.  So I can't find a syslog anywhere, although the 'usual' flew by on the screen.

Without a syslog, I'm kinda stumped!  I've used this USB stick before to build my previous system, so I know the USB is ok, the motherboard is ok...  What keeps the flash drive from loading?

When I shutdown tho, I see /dev/sda1 being closed...

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Jeff...

When you first login you will be in the root home directory /root which has no files to display by an 'ls' command ... So no output expected.

The flash drive should be mounted as /boot so what do you get when you do:

  cd /boot

  ls

I suspect an issue with the flash drive or its preparation, or with the USB port.

Is it formatted FAT or FAT32? Is the volume name UNRAID? I assume you ran make_bootable or it wouldn't have gotten anywhere.

Is it plugged in to a USB2 port?

try

cd ..

Then

ls -al

Note that capitalization is EVERYTHING in Linux!!!!

Interesting, I think this has turned out to be a "blacklisted device issue".  The ls -al did show me what I needed.  Once past that I got the NIC working (had a bad cable), then brought up the GUI and saw Blacklisted in the header.

I had used this stick on my first server build, then replaced it with a Cruzer FIT.  So sent an email to Tom to see if that's the problem.  I have other sticks, so will try that as well...  I'll post back when done...

You would know that for sure if you can hit the webUI and then go to Main / Boot Device / Flash

When you request a replacement the original is blacklisted. If you do it with another flash the GUI will probably let you do a trial or let you buy a key for it.

I asked Tom about it.  Here's his answer...

If we didn’t ‘blacklist’ GUID’s as people moved their key from device to device, what prevents someone from making a single purchase and then using that key on unlimited devices, or even simply reselling them?  The alternative for us is to implement an online validation system, which is what we are moving towards.

I get it, I thought unRaid already had some kind of online validation system.  Too bad that as a society, we behave such that you need to do this…

So the net is, if a USB has EVER had a purchased key on it, and you move that key to another USB, then you can NEVER use that original USB for an unRaid system.  I find that annoying, but I understand why now...
